I wouldn't say a screen protector is necessary, no.

Most consumer models have glossy screens which give a impression of deeper black hues, at the cost of many reflections. If you want a matte screen, look at business laptops such as the Lenovo Thinkpads, HP Elitebooks, and Dell Latitudes.

If you have a truelife, then you donot need anything. Just wipe it, it clean like new but if you have glossy then there is some remains no matter how much you clean it. So its your choice, also just to be safe from dents and scratches, you can just apply a protector and save your investment. :D

My notebook has a Full-HD with truelife. But I still find glaring when I surf internet. Especially on solid background.

I recently bought a viewguard ( www.buyviewguard.com) matte screen protector to put over my laptop screen and love it.

glossy screens usually look more vibrant and 'better' colors than matte screens. The tradeoff is the amount of glare

you still can find matte screens in business laptops, where business people want less glare(while working on the move) rather than better colors... getting rarer though

i got the buyviewguard matte protector too... probably shouldn't have used money on it, because i have accidental warranty... too many scratches, probably can replace... but the protector worksfine

    I agree with this suggestion.
