I currently have my HP dv6500 15" laptop on my desk at home. I am looking to maybe buy another monitor (22") and hook it up to my laptop off to the side. What would be a good set up to have if I wanted a bigger monitor on my desk and have it connected to my laptop so I can just use the big monitor?

External speakers, sub and cool monitor :D. I have an HP W2408h its pretty sweet, only problem is if you have it on high brightness you can get some flicker on the blacks, only sometimes though.

Also I think you should rephrase the question, I'm kind of confused by what you mean "setup" do you mean what kind of gear you should have?

By setup I don't mean like what brands, but I'm talking about how should I physically set up the laptop, monitor, keyboard, etc. on my desk. Like should I just have my laptop on one side with the lid closed and then my monitor (hooked up to the laptop) in front of me....I'm just looking for suggestions

Well if you really want a big screen, and your as lazy as I am and dont like sitting in a chair hunched over to type, try connecting the laptop to the TV and get a wireless mouse and keyboard. :D

Yes, i would just leave it on the side when connected to the monitor. unless you want to use the Laptops keyboard and touchpad. Then leave it in front of you. otherwise, just put it on the side. Which is what I do. ;)
Many people use Docking Stations, but its definitely not necessary.

I do have a 50" plasma down stairs, but this is for my room and I want to have like a 20" or 22" lcd on my desk and just want to know how I should set all this stuff up to make it work the best, without cluttering my desk

I would want to buy the lcd monitor and connect it to my laptop, and then just buy a separate keyboard, and I already have a bluetooth mouse. This way I can have my laptop on one side and then my monitor and keyboard in front of me, and still have plenty of room on my desk.

    Look at my above suggestion.

Also, for out of the way, if your not using it, you could put the laptop in the desk keyboard tray, and put keyboard on top desk. otherwise, just put it on the side. ;)

putting it into the desk keyboard tray would be perfect but I don't have one on my desk, go figure lol. But I think I will just buy the montior and another keyboard, and just leave my laptop off to the side

My Dell Latitude D830 (WUXGA) + Dell 2408WFP (WUXGA) is set up such that the laptop is at a comfortable typing level on a table/desk (connected to a Dell PR01X docking station), and the LCD is raised about a foot off the desk.

Works very well. The external LCD is set up as my primary monitor (when attached), and the laptop's onboard LCD is a secondary. So obviously, I use screens simultaneously, the big LCD for what I'm working on, and all my instant messaging/email cr*p on the bottom LCD. Or whatever the case may be.
