The wired 360 controller is 30-40 bucks and is probably the best gamepad I've ever used.

Go to any local used game store... look for something with USB... ;)

I'm still using my logitech rumblepad from 6-7 years(or more) ago. IRRC it was one of the first good ones to have a usb port and not a gameport.

I think the GameStop branded 360 controllers work on Windows. For XP, you may have to download a driver. As far as I can remember though, it shouldn't give any problems on a system running 7.

Any 360 compatible controller will be detected as a 360 controller by windows. All you have to do to use to plug it in, let it be detected, open windows update and download the driver for it. Personally, i use a razer onza tournament edition and it's been a blast ( i bought it for the adjustable tension in the sticks). I'd look for a USB controller for the 360 in the price range you want and buy that. $30-$40 is a quite decent price for a microsoft 360 controller, those things are near indestructible, the amount of abuse they can withstand is staggering.

If you already have a 360, but no wired controller, you could probably get a cheap receiver on ebay and use your wireless controller.

Go on eBay, and buy a used wired Xbox 360 controller for about $15-$20 shipped.

The Xbox 360 controller is the best Windows gamepad you will be able to find.

You can also use a PS3 controller, though it is a little more work than plug and play with the 360 controller. I use the PS3 controller sometimes because the dpad on the 360 controller is garbage.

If you prefer the stick and button layout of a Playstation controller, take a look at the Logitech F310. The nice thing about that pad is its "dual-mode" setup that you can change via a switch on the back. One setting is for X-Input, which makes the controller be detected and behave just as a 360 pad. The other is for DirectInput, which forces the controller to be detected as an old-school Logitech RumblePad. That setting is for games that aren't fully compatible with the 360 controller. It allows the triggers to be mapped as buttons, which is ideal if you want to play older games.

    Here ya go: http://forum.notebookreview.com/accessories/497568-ultimate-gamepad-review-guide.html

As for me I would not get a 360 controller to use with my laptop if it was to be traveled with it's just too bulky.

I use it at home with my desktop though since its pretty much the standard controller for gaming and most games that support controllers have native support for it.

For my laptop I use a PS3 controller its smaller and also can be used wireless. I also like the wiimote its the smallest but not good for most PC games just stuff like older emulated games.

The classic controller for wii is also great, though you have to deal with cords & adapter.

I'll pitch in yet another wired 360 pad recommendation, was worth the 25 I paid for mine, but still worth the full price, assuming the dpad doesn't annoy you.

As much as i love(d) the PS2/3 controller, compatibility is something to consider so i started to love the xbox 360 controller.

I have a wireless Xbox 360 controller and it's great. I agree it is a little bulky but it feels great in the hands. Set up was painless, all that I did was insert the wireless dongle and Windows automatically installed the drivers. Pretty much every game supports a gamepad but there is the odd one that doesn't (I'm looking at you Mass Effect) and I found Pinnacle Game Profiler really helpful for those ones.

Most games that have a 360 version will recognize the controller immediately and the key bindings will be the same than for the 360 version, as plug and play as you can get. Additional key bindings were assigned in Mass Effect and that is why i think it didn't include controller support or Bioware ran out of time or got lazy.
