Which is "better"? If it were cordless, which would have a longer battery life?
-
most likely optical but laser brings amazing precision.. most laser mouses have swappable batteries though so it doesnt matter.. you're almost always charged..
-
Laser is more precise, and doesn't seem to eat more battery. I've got a cordless Logitech MX1000 (laser) at work, and it lasts, well, ages on the battery. (I always forget to put it in the charger)
-
To be frankly, you can't tell the difference between the two.
-
well the only difference is that Laser can go up to 2000 DPI which is amazing for gaming but Optical (highest I've seen) is 800 dpi.. or maybe 1200

If you are looking for a cheap laser mouse, theres alot of deals floating around right now for the Logitech G7 for about 30-38 dollars when it retails 60-90 dollars. Its based off the G5 and it's great. I have both a G5, G7, and a MX518. I would defintely say the laser mouse are/feel alot better then the MX518 which is an optical gaming mouse with DPI up to 1600.

I don't know, but I prefer opitcal. This way I know if I still have any battery left in my mouse. I see the red light
Besides, its pretty cool in the dark.

hi there,
first of all, laser mice are in fact optical ones; the difference is: so called laser mice are using laser to light the surface and so called optical mice are using ordinary red LED for that purpose; both types have digital camera to track and calculate movements of the mouse;
and as for differences, i don't think there is actually noticable difference between good optical mouse and good laser mouse; i'd been using logitech g5 for some time, it's absolutely brilliant; but my friend's mx518 is just as good; sure it feels a little different to use one or another, but it's like that with every kind of mouse;
my conlusion is, you can't say which type of mouse is better; personally i ordered g7 for me, not because it's laser, but because i liked g5's buttons layout and design and because it's wireless; normally i would go for corded mouse, but g5's cord is very stiff and from what i've heard g7's wireless connection is flawless and i'm going to use my mouse as a some sort of remote control apart from gaming ofcourse; what bothers me is weight of g7, i would rather have lighter mouse, but you always have to sacrifice something to gain something else

i personally like the stiffness of the G5 cord. The g7 wireless isn't exactly flawless, it sometimes acts random, like it completely goes haywire. I personally don't think the g7 is THAT heavy for a full sized wireless mouse, then again, i use a weighted g5
Another note, i personally also think its nice to invest in a gaming mouse pad, preferably the Ratpadz GS for the laser/optical mouses. Its small, lightweight and portable. Perfect if you happen to find some kind of material that is like not very well suited for a laser/optical mouse. Also helps keep your mouse bottom a bit cleaner and smoother. -

Woah...there's a difference?! I've used an optical mouse...I have a logitech laser mouse now (i just noticed it was laser). I don't see any difference
-
for christmas last year i got a laser mouse and then i jumped on the comp and tested it in an fps game, seeing as how i set my mouse sensitivity low, i end up lifting the mouse off the surface of the mouse pad and from some reason the mouse goes crazy and made it impossible to play, so after about 5 min of that bullsh1t i packed it up and exchanged it at compusa for an opitcal and i been using it flawlessly ever since...maybe mine was defective???

I use a logitech G5 and I like it a whole lot better than my old logitech optical one. Basically, as in all things, it comes down to personal preference. Try both out and see which one is better for you.

Can someone tell me the difference between optical and laser mice? Both of them don't have the ball right?
-
The optical is older technology, but still pretty good today and if you have a wireless one it might drain the battery faster compared to the laser. The laser is the newer tech with faster and more precise movement. Some people say they can experience the difference in gaming. -
-
I own both and have used them in a wide range of circumstances and conditions on all sorts of PC systems and really I think it all comes down to ergonomics and whatever feels good go with it.

Optical, laser is just BS, no big difference, just an excuse to mark up the price on one $15-$40.

I think it comes down to the connection speed on wireless mice. The 2.4Ghz on my G7 is amazing--it blows any cordless mouse that I've had before (and I've had a good handful) out of the water for gaming purposes.
The laser does offer higher dpi (sensitivity) although most users probably won't go as high as the laser gaming mice can go in actual use.
Besides, optical is the older technology, so in general I think you will start to find the better offerings to become exclusively laser as time goes on. -
None of my mice have balls.
