Girlfriend started law school. Also carries a personal notebook (a HP buisness laptop from work) and sometimes carries a 2nd HP laptop for her 2nd job.

    She is 5'1".

She carries a lot of books.

When I look at most backpacks from Northface & Spire, the backpacks that are big enough are too long for a person with a small frame.

    Suggestions?

Seems like a heavy load for someone of that height. Depending on what you mean by "a lot of" you could go into messenger bags. But you get those odd days with a bunch of textbooks. You're probably best off with a smaller bag to hold the laptop and have one of those rolling backpacks carrying the large portion of books.

messenger bags are the worst, they really hurt your shoulder a lot.
I dont use normal backpacks, I am only about 5ft 5". I use military grade bags, they are made of a heavy canvas material, and are usually wide and not very deep. They are not fashionable at all, so it may not suit her tastes at all.

Booq, and Tumi make nice laptop bags, they are a bit pricey, but they are definitely nice.

    Hey there!

If you get a messenger bag for her, make sure it has *padded* shoulder straps :) More comfy...my Mobile Edge Cutebug messenger bag has a really comfy shoulder strap! ;) :)

And, that the bag has great *distribution* on the interior. That helps with the *weighted* feeling! :)

Go here for some great bags:

There many great brands for messenger bags, it depends on what you want.

I just found a really cool Belkin one by searching Amazon.com :)

    Hope that helps!

    Cin ;) :)

For a small woman that is carrying a lot of weight, you might consider getting a real back pack with a hip belt to get the weight off her shoulders. Not fashionable but much more comfortable. llbean.com
carries back packs that come in different sizes for small and large framed people. Look in their outdoors/hiking section.
