Personally, if you travel around with your bags as much as I do and don't want the leather to look very tired / start falling apart after a year or so of near-everyday use, there's not much I can recommend below $500 at least.

    Vaja is a start: http://www.vajacases.com/images/bags/messenger15_wide.html

The Glaser Day Bag looks nice: http://www.glaserdesigns.com/Pages/Briefcases/DayBags/DayBagsPD17DB.html

It would help to know what sort of style you prefer. The above two are fairly typical of the modern vs more trad style.

tumi bags are okay, not my thing but others swear by them. the downside is that they will cost you your first born.

Backpacks are nerdy? You'd be surprised.

    PS: A leather bag can

    1) look really good especially if you dress appropriately
    2) make you look like a dork especially if it's a faux leather bag with bad fashion sense.

PS: I think your recommendations might be just a tad out of his budget Vogelbung. ;)

Might give you some idea of bags that would fit the dv6t.

I dunno. Tumi, Knomo, Mandarina Duck, etc - I've been left unimpressed. I understand the sentiment, but it's the cheap shoes conundrum - they're cheap, they look the part, but are ultimately a bit crap in the overall scheme of things. Why not get something less disposable?

Well, his laptop was about 1.6k if I recall correctly, and total budget was 2.2k. Don't think he would be very inclined to shell out a third of his laptop's price on a bag, but OP might surprise me.

I like the Vaja over the Glaser though, but I doubt I would ever buy it.

Well - I guess it depends on your priorities. A truly good bag will - and I'm counting on it - definitely outlast a couple of laptops (so it kind of pays to buy the Glaser-like design than the Vaja design, which will likely date faster).

You can't necessarily judge what you spend on a laptop as a percentage of what you spend on a more visible-in-public component of your clothing. For a long time I held off spending more on laptop portage (despite having non-laptop-carrying bags and cases custom-made for a while) because I had this weird non-thinking 'prejudice' against doing the same for what I actually carry far more than my erstwhile custom-made briefcase / document bag these days.

Now, of my three main bags only the everyday-use Swaine Adeney is anywhere near one my laptops - while even ticking all the options on a Dell M6500 gets only three-quarters of the way to the next one up. (Actually - putting it like that, it's kind of horrifying)

Obviously you needn't go to my level but how much you spend on a single laptop shouldn't necessarily preclude a laptop bag that's a decent percentage of the cost of that one machine. Just sayin'.

Anyone calling me the bag lady or derivatives thereof will be surreptitiously punted off a cliff by a projectile custom-made holdall.

Oh no, I definitely get your point. And as much as I do get your point or agree with you, I could not possibly bring myself to bring myself to spend that much, not currently at any rate, or perhaps, not ever.

My point was that the OP's a relatively young student though, and not likely to have the same resources available.

    *readies projectile holdall*

Fair enough and I get your point of view too. Up to the OP I guess.

    Oh...

...Did I mention that chicks with an eye for style will notice?
