So I want an external monitor.

But they're all either ridiculously large for my tiny desk, or some stupidly small resolution, or both. Is there any smaller monitor that has a Full-HD or bigger resolution?

A second question, is there a way to turn a laptop LCD panel into an external monitor, without attaching half a laptop on it? I can't quite think of anything more perfect than that, even if I have to duct tape parts together.

Not that I know of, no. Your best bet is a relatively compact and slim 21.5" monitor; those are fairly common and aren't too much larger.

I'm not even sure if I could fit a 17" screen on the table without turning it portrait, so I can't really get that.

I just found out that it's possible to turn a laptop LCD into a monitor with a controller from njytouch.

That would only cost total $133 (+~15 for vga cable?) assuming I am to buy an AUO B170UW01 V.0 (17" 1920x1200) from laptopscreen.com. It wouldn't have any excessive frames or anything either, so it would be super compact. I could even slap it on the wall if I wanted to. Seems a bit too good to be true haha.

However I'm a bit concerned about the performance, colors and latency and all, because there isn't much information.
