I am considering getting a lightscribe drive. I would likely buy a desktop drive and just put in in an enclosure. If I don't do that, I would just buy an external. Any recommendations about brands to buy or not buy. Is lightscribe worth it?

For lightscribe you have to use special discs and it only burns a two tone image on the top of the disc so based on that, I don't think it's worth it because they are not done in color. If they were then I think I'd be more apt to use them, but grayscale images are just not worth the extra money to me.

The CD's look to be about 2x as expensive as I just paid (50 for $8). To me, it wouldn't be bad to pay that price for nicer results. I do a lot of photography, so I give people lots of CD's with pictures (so nicer looking CD's would be a plus). Aside from the media, is there a reason to avoid it?

That's my only gripe but I'm not a professional artist so I can see your point there. I admit that lightscribe it is a lot better than trying to put printed labels on cd/dvd's and it does have a sense of professionalism about it. I have messed up many a cd/dvd trying to get the sticky label to match up right even with the "easy labeler" from fellowes. I don't know the models but some printers will print directly on special cd/dvd's with a paper like coating on the top of it as another option.

Yeah, but a new printer seems more expensive, and as I am in college and live in dorms 8 out of 12 months, space would be an issue with that. It seems I could get a good drive for $60-$70, then buy media.

HP have the best quality (both disks and drives- heck they invented it).
The external enclosures they use aren't the best looking though.

Yeah if you live in the dorms then you are strapped for room so I can see that logic.

I agree with you, if I was gonna get one, it would be HP.

I have heard a lot about Lite-On being good, does that apply for these as well? Also, it seems that the HP is $15 more (the Lite-On I was look at was $30, this HP is $45 at newegg). Is the HP really worth that?

I have heard great things about Lite-On in general but not about their lightscribe drive in particular. Maybe google it and see if anyone wrote a review on it recently.

I am looking at getting this drive. Does anyone see any reason not to?

The reviews on the site looked good so I think you would be ok. I did see something about using DVD-RW's but most people don't use them.

OK. Thanks. I have never burned a rewritable disk in my life, so I don't think that could end up as a problem.

I did one time back in the day when they first came out. Bad mistake. It read at 4x which was ridiculously slow so I never did that again..
