    Hi all,

I'm buying the 17" Macbook Pro soon. While the laptop itself is fairly light, once you add the power brick, ext. hard drive and other accessories, weight becomes an issue.

So I'd like a recommendation for the lightest backpack that can hold that laptop. I'm okay if it's thin, or shallow, or if it's expensive, as long as it's really light.

    Thanks.

One VERY important thing to bear in mind. The Crapbook Pro is light - the 17 inch in particular for what it is - because it's among other things, flimsy: And we're talking about in-bag impacts, not how solid the unibody construction appears to be.

If you want to avoid tears later, I would suggest that you get the most protective bag, not the lightest. I can't give any specific recommendations at this time but that is my 2c.

Thanks for the replies and info guys.

I'm really looking for a traditional backpack and not a messenger case or slingbag. So some of these choices dont apply for me.

As for the protection issue, i agree its important, but I'd rather get a light backpack and a good sleeve than large and heavy backpack.

Anyway, if there are other suggestions, keep'em coming!

All right. In terms of lightest, there's this:

Although you'll have a bit of the Ninja Turtle / Quasimodo thing going on. It also seems to me to be a license to warp a Crapbook in no time.

The Timbuk2 Underground Daypack has a quoted weight of 2.2lbs (I'm not sure whether that's for the large or regular) but around that range is pretty much the lightest you'll get for a regular styled backpack while retaining a decent amount of durability and staying in a cost range that most of you guys are able to swallow. Most laptop specific bags that I've seen are around a pound heavier (like the XL that I use when wheezing along on the bicycle), or even more (the less useful but more visually intriguing Axio that I also use).

Get a Zeroshock III case for it with the backpack, then you will never have to worry about anything :)

Yeah a zeroshock is definitely on my list...

As for the backpack weight, I was thinking somewhere around 1.5lbs.

Well - it depends on how much you're willing to spend, I suppose. I'm in the process of tailoring the weight / durability / utility balance of my computer-related luggage by a custom combination of carbon fibre, titanium, aluminium and leather which means I should end up with lightweight yet pretty durable luggage. Are you willing to commit 3-5 times the cost of your 17" Crapbook to achieve the same aims as mine for a single piece of luggage?

That might be a little too much for me. Why do you keep calling it a crarpbook by the way?

I call it (by it, I mean multiples of every single variant of the Crapbook Pro since its release in early '06) what it is - in comparison to the similarly priced / specced Windows machines I've had. And to answer the question why buy multiples if they are Crapbooks, the answer is very simple: OS X apps.
