So even though I've never had to use the LoJack services on my laptop, since it's never been stolen or needed to be recovered, I still find it a great idea and a great buy. Laptop theft is especially huge at my university and the program keeps my mind at ease.

What do you guys think about it? Just curious because even though I'm a fan, so many people haven't heard of it or really overlook it like "yeah right, that'll never happen to me."

Laptop theft is a PEBCAK problem. Pack up your stuff when you need to walk away and take it with you.

I had it for a while when I had my XPS 1530. I think it is certainly beneficial if your lappy is stolen, and can be recovered via LoJack recovery.

Here is an older thread, where it worked for a fellow forum member (from 3/09)! :)

For 3 years it's only $100, why not? You never know what will happen, it's nice to have the extra protection for a small cost, I know I'm going to get it.

Good decision(s)! :) I didn't renew mine when it expired on my 1530. For students, etc. (well anyone) ~ it's a nice added "silent security" per se to have!

with people with some decent googling skills, it seems like its pretty easy to crack.... i was browsing to see what would come up,, there is even some videos up online how to get around it... and delete it perminatly.... so im second guessing how good it is.... i was gunna get it for my G73,,, but until i hear that it isnt easy to crack im gunna lay off of it for now

From what I'm seeing, you'd have to be pretty computer-savvy to break LoJack, and if you're that good at squeezing apart BIOSs, you should be working IT and not stealing laptops in the first place.

its the same thing with a laptop lock... its a deterrent or backup feature...

if someone wants to steal your laptop and sell it, he can do it... you HAVE to be careful where you put your items...

if you are buying it straight out of pocket, then no... if you buy a laptop with an option(like my Dell m1330 laptop's config came with it), then sure

The best protection is being aware of what is going on around you and to not make your laptop an inviting target. If you think $100 is a fair price to have better piece of mind, then invest in it.

The chances of the person stealing it, looking for Lojack, and cracking it is extremely low.. that's not really realistic. You know what kind of people steal laptops, right?

A lowlife with an ounce of computer knowledge would a) not connect it to the internet before selling it off, and/or b) wipe it before getting rid of it. Immoral != stupid.

Lojack (as well as any other single form of protection) should not be thought of as a cure-all in the protection of your laptop. Rather, it is one step in what should be a system of defenses to keep your property and valuable information safe and secure. It's a good option, so long as you don't think it's foolproof. The best protection, is for you to be vigilant.

Full hdd encryption + off site backup > anything else

Hardware can be replaced easy ...

You can't prevent ppl from extracting hdd and recovering windows/firefox passwords and all information without encrypting the full hdd.

Finding computer put out in the curb and hdd intact containing everyones last will with family nude photos .... so you see it's not just if someone
steals it but when discarding or losing it.

Of course it's better to not have the laptop stolen in the first place, what what if it does through some fluke?

I've heard LoJack doesn't work very well on Macs though, but I don't quite understand the chances of them erasing it on a Windows.

Never walk away from your laptop even if the clerk at starbucks says your coffee is ready, pick that sucka up and bring it with you. Never leave it alone in class, thats a no no, always sit in front of it, or if necessary bring it with you. Going to the washroom, thats right pack it up stick it in your back pack and bring it, this isnt just some pen and paper that can be replaced this is expensive hardware, dont let your buddy nattering at you lose focus on your laptop to go get a bite, pack it up and bring it.

I know theres a dongle for phones that vibrates when you start walking away from it, maybe theres one for laptops too that gives you a friendly reminder your taking off without your crown jewel.
