This mouse is great, in fact the best I've ever owned, with exception to one annoyance: after some random amount of time, the scroll wheel starts controlling the volume on my PC. It's very annoying. A reboot temporarily fixes it, only to do it again at a randomly later time. I'm getting tired of rebooting my machine for this. Anyone else experience this and find a fix?

I used to have the bigger brother, the MX Performance and your right, they are good mice. I've never heard of this problem but I'm sure it is something stupid going on. Have you tried uninstalling/re-installing the Set Point Software and Drivers? Also, look into the Set Point Software and make sure you don't have the scroll wheel set to control the volume.
After you do this and it still doesn't work, I would scan your system for malware. Put your computer into Safe Mode and see if it is still doing it. Lastly, check the start up tab under (msconfig). Make sure you don't have a weird program starting up causing this issue. I know that there is software out there that can enable the scroll wheel to control volume. -
i had recently done a clean install of windows and the issue was present before (with an older version of setpoint), the same as it is now. i haven't been able to find an option is setpoint to control this, either. i'll try safemode, though the condition is hit or miss, as the timing seems random, sometimes i encounter the issue, and sometimes not. i'll also examine my startup programs.

I have this mouse but I have never had this problem. Very odd.

A Google search shows other people with this problem. Everyone is using a different mouse so it must be a software issue.

I think I'll uninstall SetPoint and use the mouse without it and see what happens

FIXED!!! FINALLY!!!
the condition presented itself, again, when attempting to type a dash (-) and it would lower my volume. i checked to see if my mouse was affected, and, sure enough, it was. i tried several different combinations of Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Fn and none worked. then i tried the Windows key and...SUCCESS! for some reason (it is Windows), the Windows key was "stuck". simply pressing it again got it "unstuck" and everything is back to normal.
i'm extremely happy it wasn't my mouse, after all. i love it too much to get rid of it.
hope this finds it's way to helping others -
That's a really interesting issue. I have the same mouse...been using it for about 4 years now...when did this start happening? do I have something to look forward to?

i've had it 6-9 months. i really think it is an issue with my laptop (in my sig, below), more than the mouse. i'm thinking it has something to do with HP's "media keys" (or whatever they are called). i enabled them in the BIOS so i wouldn't have to keep pressing the Fn key to dim my display at night. they also give easy controls for media players, like iTunes, (play/pause, FF, Rew, Stop) and one touch **Volume Controls**. <- i think this is the issue, though i'm not certain.
i use the brightness, play/pause, ff, and mute too much to switch back, plus i know how to get rid of the problem when it comes up, now.
