So I know the two mice are both excellent for gaming, but my main question has to do with build quality-- which of these two is going to last for longer? I'm going to college in a few months, and I want to get a mouse that will hopefully last me at least 2 or 3 years. I've heard excellent things about the MX518's longevity, but not so much about the G5's. If the G5 will last 2 years, I'd prefer that since I'd prefer the precision of a laser mouse for non-gaming use, but if it's going to burn out on me in a year, then I'd probably go for the 518 instead.

I have the g7, basically a wireless g5, and its still going strong after 2 years.

My MX518 is still brand new after several years of use, my G7 is holding up great after a year of use. But the MX518 feels better and I use it more often and its older. I would say the Mx518 is the better.
Plus I have used G5 and I do not like the scroll wheel as much or the texture on it. -
Thanks for the input guys. Honestly, I preferred the feel of the g5 when I tried out at a friend's house, so thats what I think I'm gonna get.

Id have to say its basically personal preference. Prices vary sometimes one is cheaper then the other. The G5 weight cartride is helpful to some. Also the texture is nice for grip if you sweat alot. Many say it skips but as a graphics artist I would pick up on it fairly quickly and I would say its smoother then any other mouse Ive tried. I personally like the wheel. Allows better control in gaming IMO.

ive had my mx518 for 3 years and it's been working perfectly fine. i even bashed it around cuz i thought i was getting a new mouse and it's still brand new. works like it's out of the box. i bought the g5 but if you're not a hardcore gamer the extra $$ is better spent elsewhere.

both will last equally... but G5 does not perform better than MX518 under competitive Gaming.
although G5 has advantages such as Weight Adjustment but that cannot justify bad performance.
the mouse literally skipped while i was playing CZ -

What game do u play? and are u a low-sensi or high sensi player?
the problem affects only low-sensitivity players who move their arms are phenomenal speeds. -
Day of defeat. Usually high sens minus a few guns where i play very low

I just got my Logitech MX518 a month back... and I pretty much love it!
