With the impending arrival of my laptop, I'm looking to replace my corded Logitech G5 mouse. I want to have something portable that I can take on the road, but also something that would be useful at home. Gaming will be light to moderate. The MX610 is cheaper, but the G7 has rechargeable batteries and a nicer look.

    What do you think?

Rechargeable batteries are so very useful. I would go with the G7, IMHO

I agree, the G7 is the way to go. The rechargeable batteries are great, being able to always have a charged battery handy. The small USB dongle is great because you can just take that and go if you're not going to be gone long and you don't have to bother with the big charger.

Both mice have the mini USB receiver, so that's not a consideration. I do appreciate the responses thus far. :)

I have the G7 and can say it's the best overall mouse (system) that I've ever had.

The batteries charge through the USB connector; the charging base is not necessary for the USB dongle; the response is instantaneous (great for gaming); the slick feet on the mouse; 2 rechargable bateries!

My one gripe is that it doesn't feature the "forward" button--only a "back" button. Over the years I've gotten used to having both.

I'd say it depends what you're using it for. I have the MX610, and it's a great mouse for web browsing and stuff like that. The sheer number of buttons that it has makes it incredibly useful. And the non-rechargeable batteries are really a non-issue; Logitech claims a six month battery life for a pair of regular AA alkalines, and I have no reason to disbelieve that. I use a pair of lithiums in mine to cut down on the weight.

I'm not really a fan of it for gaming, but that's mostly because the shape of it isn't suited to my gaming style (I like my Razers for that). It's reasonably sensitive (probably around 1000 dpi, but I've never found anything official), and doesn't lag, but the feet are just plastic and don't slide as well as teflon feet do.

For general purpose, I'd suggest the MX610, especially if you're using it portably. From what I've heard, the G7 has pretty poor battery life, and it would suck to drain both and not have access to a charger on the road.

Lag while gaming is a primary concern. With my G5, I don't have any Logitech software installed, and its default of 800 dpi is plenty sensitive for my purposes. The teflon feet are nice, but is it worth the $30+ price premium the G7 commands? I can always buy rechargable batteries for use with the MX610, and teflon pads cost $4. But again, the MX610 doesn't look as cool as the G7. :p

Decisions, decisions...keep these suggestions coming. They're most helpful. :)

If you already have a G5 for gaming, why get a G7. I say get the 610 because no matter where you go you'll be able to find batteries unlike with the G7. If both of the batteries are dead then you are s.o.l.

Do you have a particular reason for not installing the software? Because if so, then the many buttons of the MX610 really aren't so much of a feature. They're only really useful if you set them up in SetPoint.

As for lag, I've certainly never noticed it on my mouse. It's very responsive. However, it does shut the laser off fairly quickly when the mouse is inactive, and it takes a good second or so to start back up again. I gather that the G7 doesn't have a problem with this, so you should consider if that could be a problem for you.

Also, I really do recommend lithium-ion batteries for the MX610. It's a very light mouse on its own, and you really do notice the weight of whatever battery type you put in there. Heavy NiMH rechargeables would really make their presence felt, whereas lithiums keep things much lighter. And besides, they'll probably last the better part of a year anyways.

And about the looks... I personally think the MX610 is a very good-looking mouse. It looks pretty impressive in person, because the silver plastic makes it seem as if the mouse is twisted in some hideous fashion when in fact, it's quite comfortable. In my opinion, it's actually a more ergonomic and better laid out mouse than my MX518, which has a very similar shape to the G7.

I have 2 G7's, a black one from Newegg for $59 and one green one fron Ebay for $36. One for desktop and one for laptop. They are really nice and feels so good in the hand.

One more vote for the G7, even for portable use. The big negative is that the battery will not reliably last for more than one day, but if all you're doing is going to and from worlk OR you're willing to carry the charger with your laptop then it shouldn't be a major problem.

After much thought, I've decided to keep the G5 at home. As I was rummaging through my desk at work, I found my old Intellimouse Optical so I'll take that with me on the road. Since I don't use Logitech's software, there shouldn't be any conflicts. Just have to get some new teflon pads for the Intellimouse and my PCMCIA USB card. :D
