I wanna get a gaming mouse, but I cant decide between Logitech MX518 or Logitech G5. My favorite game is CSS but i also play crysis, bf2142, and cod4. Which mouse would you reccomend if any, or if you have any other mice recomendations let me know...

I read this in the gaming mouse section of the forums comparing the mice.
The Optical Mouse is the most popular among Gamers & NOT laser mouse.
This is because Laser mouse has high Lift - Off distance i.e. it tracks the surface even after being lifted above the surface for upto 10 mm.

MX518: This is the most popular & perhaps the oldest Gaming mouse. Great for Counterstrike players on a budget. It has On-the-fly DPI adjustment settings (400, 800 & 1600) which let you adjust DPI of the mouse while Gaming. It is easily available in the market & is preferred mainly by Counterstrike 1.6 players. 1600 DPI, & Palm Design. Although there are some issues like Slippery surface (when your palms are sweating), Lack of on-board memory for storing Profile which is crucial in competitions as you don't carry the Driver CD everywhere. It's price is much lower now & it still offers a Gaming Grade performance.

    >Logitech G5: This is one of the best selling Mainstream Gaming-mouse currently, it's price has also fallen by now & u can buy it for much lower price, it has a great design Palm grip design. Its a laser mouse (Yes, Laser mice Skip much easily compared to Optical mice) , has Adjustable weight cartridge, (sounds cool right?) for perfect handling, 2000 DPI which is high. Top of the line but since its Laser hence professional gamers dont use it & hence logitech hardly sponsors any gamers. I would recommend this mouse if you want to play games like Crysis, Bioshock etc.

    Thanks :)

There is practically no difference between these mice. The mx518 works perfectly for BioShock and Crysis, and the G5 works perfectly for CSS. The author of your quotation is just promoting consumerism by exaggerating the minute differences between mice.

Personally, I didn't like the G5's weight distribution even though it is customizeable. I preferred the mx518's shape, its weight, the roundedness of the mouse and the color. Also, the sensitivity change is useful beyond imagination in CSS, when playing, for example, with a sniper + pistol. Lower sensitivity for the sniper, and higher sensitivity for the pistol, makes the aiming even more effective and streamlined.

You can use either mouse no matter whether you like to move your mouse a lot or a little during battle... I disagree with X2P's diagnosis. Well, actually, I agree with him, but the distinction is sooooo small that there are more important things (like the way it looks!) that take precedence in my opinion.

The Ikari Steel Series Laser mouse has almost no lift. Given its design origins and popularity among pro-gaming circles, it's definitely another unit to consider.

I am not a big time gamer at all, but I held both the MX518 and G5 side by side at the store. Speaking from an aesthetics perspective only(as I did not test a game or anything with them), the 518 is slightly bigger than the G5 making it too big for me. I also found the 518 to be ugly(rust color like someone left it out on the porch) and I did not care for the shiny plastic. Just my opinion, I am sure everybody has theirs :)

I just got the 518 and it is great!!! It isnt too big and actually is kinda light weight! I got the silver one and the design looks really cool. I love the sensitivity change on the fly option and the build quality is really great.

    The G5. No doubt.
And Im not sure where you read that "laser jumps" stuff but that is totally false.

I have the MX1000 and the G5 and both are AMAZING.

ive been using a 518 for about 2 years, it is definitely worth the money. it is very light, if you like that..

that being said i will be buying a g5 and weighing it down all the way. you really should try to find someone who owns them so you can try them out. i prefer the g5 but they are both solid mice.

MX518 is better performer per dollar spent.

G5 has luxurious but unnecessary features like Weight cartridge.. great for experimentation but if u travel then u gotta take care of the entire set.

For a first timer MX518 will never disappoint.

Since u play CS...i heard moving G5 at high speeds caused the Cartridge cover to flung open.

What you find "unnecessary" others may find very nice. I like weight adjustment myself.

Most people set it up once the way they like and leave it like that. You don't have to take all the weights with you when you travel. It takes time to readjust to a different mouse setup whether with a different model or weights so I don't do it often.

You've seriously got to be using the G5 like a hammer for the cartridge to fly out.

I just bought an MX518 and am quite satisfied with it.

Before I have been using a logitech razorMX, yet I needed one with a cable and after a lot of research this was the best one I could get.

I read a lot about the G5. I turned the G5 down because of many reporting a quick tear and wear of its surface. Supposedly a layer of the plastic peels down rather quickly after using it.

    just my 2 cents
