I am def. no audiophile - I am simply looking for some speakers that a 1 or 2 levels above my Sager 5793's. I don't need anything fancy. I will use them primarily for games (RPG's and FPS) and a little downloaded music. I like the idea of minimum cords. What do you think of the Logitech V-20s? They are USB powered. My question is can USB powered speakers have any negative effects at all on the notebook? Can it decrease performance in any way? Battery power does not count as I will be using my notebook mostly on AC power. Any opinions appreciated!

What kind of budget are you working on? I had the same dilema, I ended up buying a X-fi external sound card and altec lansing xt1 2.0 speakers. Setup cost me around 100 (got speakers on ebay).

The speakers themselves will enhance the sound quality by themselves w/o any major drain on your cpu either way. I run a USB notebook cooler, speakers, external sound card, mouse and external HD off mine and have no issues with power.

I lkie the V-20s but I like the X-240 better I know its a couple of extra cables but I think they sound better than the V-20s.

Thanks guys....I don't want to spend really over $120 on speakers - give or take...audio is just not priority for me. I would rather spend it elsewhere. I can get the V20's new for $39.99 lol. Thanks for the suggestions..I'll check out the X-240's too.

I have the V-20s. They are great for portable use. But something that will be set up on a desk mostly permanent will do a lot better. For one thing, theye can be better or even a 2.1 system for much better frequency response and AC power gives much better power output. USB is limited to a max of 500mA which means about 2.5 watts which means less than 1 watt true effective output. Not gonna play very loud or very low frequencies. That requires a bigger power source and bigger speakers.

I have Z4s on my desk in the office a larger full range system I got on sale a Sharper Image on my bedroom system. And the V-20s live in my computer carrying case.

    YMMV
