I'm looking for a new gaming mouse. I've had really good experiences with logitech in the past so I'd like to buy from them. However, I've encountered 2 options and I don't know if it's worth the money to pay the extra money for the g500.

    This is the g400

Besides the 15 dollar price difference and the weights in the g500. I don't really see a huge difference. Do any of you have either of these mice? Do you think it would be worth it to pay the 15 dollars extra to get the g500?

I would get the G400. In my experience, optical sensors tend to be of higher quality and overall reliability than lasers, and are usually less picky about the types of surface you can use them on. The only real advantage lasers have is higher DPI, which is all but meaningless once you go beyond 2,000 or so, unless you play at extremely high sensitivity.

Cool dude, thanks for the info. I was leaning towards the g400. I don't want to pay 50 bucks for a mouse.

It's really a matter of preference. I love my G500, but if I had to do it over again I would probably get the 400. My first 500 had sort of a janky scroll wheel, even when it was in the clickscroll mode, it was still way too easy to scroll unintentionally. I sent that one back because the cord braiding had separated. The new one is much better in all aspects.

One thing I would recommend is to get a good mousepad. I have a Razer Kabuto that I got for like 15 bucks at Best Buy and it makes a huge difference. Tracking is butter smooth. It's a bit on the small side, but I generally play with high sensitivity, so I'm usually only using a few inches of my pad anyway.

That QcK is basically identical to the Kabuto. I'd say it's a great choice for high sensitivity gaming. I vastly prefer smooth pads like that to textured ones.

I got a G500 for $35 last week (Black Friday) at Amazon. Newegg also had it for the same price. It's been great so far. I know the wireless G700s were at ~$50 too. I don't know if those prices will come around again soon, but if you really want to go one way or another, it may be worth watching.

The QcK series are good mousepads. I would get a larger one to allow for more room unless you play at high sensitivity and don't move your mouse much.

Yea I will definitely get a larger one. Even while Im not gaming I prefer the larger mouse pads.

The Razer Goliathus series are another one to consider. They're a similar lineup of soft mousepads in various sizes, but they're also available in Speed and Control textures. I have the extra-large Goliathus Speed edition, and I love it.

    I just ordered a G400 which was $30 less than a G500.

I don't have the mouse just yet but for a laptop that I casually game on with the exception on LOL and upcoming Dota 2 I don't think the laser sensor, hyper scrolling and 5700 DPI setting was worth the extra $ for me.

I use a gaming grade mouse pad (Goliathus Control) and I'm pretty sure the optical (G400) vs laser (G500) performance should be negotiable when using both mice on any decent mouse pad.

For me the 3600 DPI on the G400 is more than enough, honestly when using my bro's G9 I never go over 1800 DPI but I do however like to set 500/1000Hz polling rate which I can do with on the G400.

While I like Logitech's Hyper scrolling wheel on the G500 (bro's G9), I just can't justify spending an extra $30 for the one feature on the G500 that I like and can make use of; the G400 is not my main mouse for web browsing and general usage (only for gaming) as I've a M510 for that task.

So given my case the G400 is used as a secondary mouse just for gaming and at times some general usage when I'm too lazy to go fetch the M510 for a swap after a gaming session, I just hope I've made the right decision on going with the G400 instead of getting the G500 for an extra $30.

    Yeah, you'll be fine.

I actually bought a Logitech G400 over the holidays to replace my Logitech G500. I found that I prefer an optical sensor over a laser sensor, because of the reliability of its tracking.

I'd prefer G400. Its basically the new MX518 and a QcK surface would work great with it.

I've also QCK cloth mouse pad but I prefer the the Goliathus's thickness and over the QCK's.

    Thanks for the replies.

Might as well get a G9x, it's only a few dollars more and a much better mouse in my opinion. I had the G5 (predecessor to G400/500) and the G9x is ergonomically superior.
