Original price when i saw them about a year back was $399.99!!!!!!!!!! right now, amazon has the lowest price on this that i've seen in a while. last week it was $227, right now it's $189.99!!!!

i ordered a set yesterday - it shipped from PA yesterday and right now when i checked status, it said that it's out for delivery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 im in ny! it practically went from PA to my doorstep within 18 hours.

i paid $189.99 + nyc sales tax + $37 for shipping. the unit weighs 50+ pounds so shipping was crazy high - like 1/5th the cost of the speaker system.

    my total was $246.

i hope someone else buys these things too. read the reviews, they're very good.

The Logitech Z-5500 is a very good and affordable surround set.

If I had the extra cash I would consider picking this up..

they're affordable because they're pc speakers but also has inputs for dvd players/recievers/mp3 players/ipod/etc. this thing has a wide array of ports so you can plug in sooo many devices.

i connect my pc's to my 42" plasma tv in my living room and right now, audio comes out of a nice 2 speaker+sub system i have. i will be replacing that with this setup hopefully tonight!

so, for me, this will be a home theatre solution. i always use the same speakers - if im on the computer listening to music, or if im playing a dvd on my computer and outputting the video to my plasma - i will be using these speakers.

i bought these for the price vs. other solutions. i will let you know tonight (hopefully) if they were worth it or not :-D

when my laptop comes in, these will be the same speakers that i will be using for it too. my laptop has a tv tuner also so these speakers will cover a ton of functions for my setup.

I think I'll buy it too.

Dell has it for $209.99 right now + Free Shipping.

My total after tax = $219

I'll have to decide soon if I want to get it though, since Dell's offer expires tomorrow!

that is an awesome deal through dell - i didnt know they had it for cheaper i would have gotten it there as well... $37 for shipping is a little too much for me but im hoping my experience with the speakers will be priceless! l0l.

let us know how you like it. out of the 400+ reviews on amazon, it appears that the most common complaint is the size of the sub! lol. but it's a quality system so that's expected.... mine still shows 'out for delivery' on the shipping status.

I'm actually still deciding whether or not I should get this 5.1 system, or a 2.1 system--- I'll be living in a college dorm for the next several years most of the time... But this is a good deal from Dell...

^ depending on the size of the dorm room, i'd stick to the 2.1 setup. i say that only because, if it's the typical size of a dorm room (10 feet by 10 feet?), you really won't have the full feel of the system or it's power.

my living room is approximately 20 feet long by 16 feet wide. my front speakers (left, center, right) are going to be about 5 feet apart from eachother and the 2 rear speakers will be about 10 or 12 feet apart.

im going to point the front left+right and rear left+right about 20 degrees towards the outside, that way the sound will go in every direction.

edit: if you have like a common dorm living room (some colleges have this), then it would be worthwhile in getting a few of your dorm mates to chip in and buy this - assuming they want a nice all-round sound system... just a thought.

Yea, my living space is very small. I'll probably go with the 2.1 then, it'll be cheaper too.

Since you have a DV7t, are you going to use the 5.1 with that? If so, are you going to get a dedicated sound card for that so that your Z5500 system can pick up on the enhancements? I'm looking at Dell again, they have the Creative X-fi Soundblaster on sale. Have you had any experience or knowledge on this sort of stuff?

I have been using this set for the last year and it is just beautiful!! It is one of the most powerful sets for a computer out there. The thing sounds amazing and can get loud, which is what I wanted. As was mentioned it can hook up to a lot of different devices. One of the nice things is that the RMS power to the speakers is very high, 65W per speaker and 188W for the 10" ported sub. The only thing is that there are a lot of wires to deal with(speaker and power wires) and you need to have the space for it(i.e have the speakers spread out the correct distance from you as to give you the 5.1 surround sound experience and proper imaging - Which I don't have at the moment :( ). Another nice thing is that it can play movies that have 5.1 surround sound and Dolby DTS sound. The whole set seems very high quality; you will see when you open it.

If you like to watch movies or listen to music while working on your computer than these are for you. You are making a good purchase. Thats a good price.

thank you for the info fire snake. my speakers were delivered about half an hour ago - nearly 24 hours after i made the order!!!!!!!!!!!!! im glad i made the right decision! although the $37 shipping was steep, it was definitely worth it ;-D

the onboard/integrated sound card on the dv7t provides for up to 7.1 surround sound i believe (hp lists it as "8 speaker configurable") so i was simply going to plug the speakers into the laptop and tweak the sound settings a bit. i was going to watch a dvd to make sure the sound is being distributed properly. i dont think i will need an external sound card to use them.

I have enough room, in my room, but I have to worry about my family at night after 11pm. Will I be able to hear speakers put in the back corners of my room at lower volumes? My rooms about 20feetx20.

i think you will be okay. the cables for the far rear speakers are 25' according to the description. the cables for the fronts are about 15' each.

How's the background hiss on these speakers? I have the Z 680 and it's pretty bad. When I'm in my room, which is fairly small, I can easily hear the hiss from 5 feet away.

^ a few people on the amazon reviews said there is no hissing sound so i will go by their words and i'll decide for myself when i set these puppies up tonite.

many people said that listening to mp3s through these speakers is like listening to those songs for the 1st time - there is that much detail. i can not wait to get home.

I have no background hiss with my set. Remember that the way the program material was recorded makes a big difference.

Another nice thing is that it has a pretty powerful 10" sub - 188W RMS. There are a lot of lower end home theater systems that don't even have close to this much.

I'm talking about background hiss present even when nothing is playing. I can just turn on the speakers and I can hear the hissing. I've heard that I just have a defective unit. Logitech said they would have sent me a new set if I had reported it earlier (don't blame Logitech on this one, I had the unit for 6 years). At the time, I didn't know how much background hiss was normal. Oh well, just makes me more willing to get the Z 5500 :D

i installed the system a few hours ago and have been using it. i've connected my mp3 player and laptop to it and the sound is pretty nuts! you really feel like you are in the song and when you're watching a movie with surround sound, you'll hear something behind you and you want to look back!!! hahaha

as for hissing, none at all. my speaker setup isn't ideal yet because i dont have stands (so the speakers are a little too close) but it's awesome! the remote comes in pretty handy, i wonder how i listened to music without a remote! lol

well worth the $250. if anyone is thinking about getting this setup, definitely get it.

as for connecting it to a higher end sound card, i havent done this yet. i've just connected my devices via stereo jack and tested the sound with some movies and some 320kbps mp3s i had- some really good techno. i like what i've heard so far. lets see what else i can find to raise my ears!

Sweet!! Yeah this set is awesome for the price. I mean some portable shelf systems cost around this price with no where near the quality and power.

PS - I am listening to some techno as I speak. Check out Transitions Vol1 - John Digweed. This album is nuts...... :) :D

The negative reviews by the people there, are just as ominous as the good reviews are hopeful. It goes beyond random faulty gear.

man these speakers are good. i didnt turn them up a lot yesterday but this morning, as i was getting ready to go to work, i blasted some daft punk on them and WOW, the clarity is soooo crazy.

you know that thx effect that comes up and the volume goes from lower to loud? i have to download that as an mp3 and set it up as my windows startup sound so i can scare the bejesus out of my gf ;]]]]]

    l0l.

i am just using a stero input and the quality is sooo good. i can not imagine how good they would sound coming out of a high-end sound card.

i'm pretty happy with these. im sooooo glad i waited for the price to come down. the current setup i had - a 2 speaker / 1 sub altec lansing setup was really good and i had it for over 4 years. sadly, they were replaced by this beast of a system ;]

Yeah, notice how your old set lasted 4 years and is living on; the negative reviews on amazon agree at about 2 years those speakers will fail you.

There is no dead-on-arrival negative reviews, its mostly people saying that after 2 years of use. Even with light use.

well, lets see what happens. but if mine wind up lasting 2 years and they die, it'd totally be worth it. and at least i'd lose $189 as opposed to $399!

there is a bright side to everything haha

im blasting daft punk live as we speak. it's crazy. you'd think theres robots behind you!

i was actually quite impressed with the quality of the speakers. they look very good, all the cables and speakers came absolutely orderly packed. the build on the speakers is solid and the massive sub looks top notch. the cables as some people have said are thinner than regular stereo cable but they do the job quite well so theres no need to swap them out.

    ^ LOL

i got one of their mp3's of their show in las vegas last year. that show is bananas. i can listen to the entire 1.5 hour mp3 without skipping any parts - it's that good.
