Really neat tech adopting wireless charging found on new cellphones

It will take more then this to get me to cut the cord on my gaming mouse but it's a great idea.

That actually looks really cool. I'm all about wireless charging, one less physical port. I'm a bit skeptical about the latency, I think I'd have to spend some time with one before saying one way or the other on that part.

Yeah, it'd be interesting to see the reviews. Although I can't help but feel you'd be locked to mousepad as that's the charging unit, which may feel limiting. If aftermarket mats were compatible, this may very well disrupt the industry.

If the initial models get enough interest I'm sure you'll see all kinds of aftermarket support, but the problem they will run into is that there probably isn't a universal mouse wireless change standard so the first round of aftermarket charging pads wouldn't be universal. Unless they're using the same standards as for phones (I think there's only two) in which case it wouldn't be that hard. What I'd really like to see is a universal wireless charging standard, and then one deskpad that would charge say a wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, phone, maybe wireless headset, just by them sitting on it.saturnotaku likes this. -

An ultrawide desk mat that supports charging and data through a single USB cable would be amazing. Maybe they could also develop a version with a modular battery pack so you could use it as a wireless lap desk. -

I could go back to couch gaming. -
The issue with this is heat.
We had some projects about it in uni, and what it all boils down to, is how to dissipate heat, and be ultra slim without compromising all of the features requested.
Maybe one day. -

The charge circuit itself generates too much heat? I saw an article a while back with this super light material that you could put a blowtorch under it and your hand on top and not feel anything, but I imagine it's probably not already a thing because it's either more expensive than printer ink made out of diamonds and unicorn blood or it causes cancer. -
There is an excellent article on this topic: Inductive Wireless Charging is Now a Thermal Design Problem
Essentially, it is a mixture of using the most approved materials, the newest technology, the thinnest smartphones, and still being able to generate enough power through wireless charging, which generates a decent amount of heat, to fuel the device.
From the article:
-
That's aerogel, which is exactly the wrong material for this application. You can't dissipate heat if you can't conduct it to the exterior.

A good read. Thanks for posing that. -

I was thinking blocking rather than conducting away, incorrectly I might add.
