i.e. significantly heavier than the 17-inch Macbook Pros, e.g. the Dell Precision M6000 series.
In case the product is ambiguous:

My guess is that the friction mechanism is geared for Macbook weights, but I wanted to know if anyone is successfully using it with a much heavier machine. Failing that I'm going for the X-Base, but I wanted something that's classy but suspends the M64/500 higher than the X-Base does.

Nice looking. I use a stand and put it on top of a turning table, the one they use for TV stand
cheers ... -
To be honest, I think the X-Base looks better! Can the balumda actually extend upwards? Or it it just a tilt mechanism?
-
So do I. It's just that the Lift does what it says. It lifts. The point you see is that it tilts in a way that the screen is significantly elevated, and that works better for me. It's just important to know from practical user experience if it can support and tilt safely notably heavier notebooks. -
Balmuda is truly for the Mac user in its design and price. Not going to lie the X-Base looks soooooooooo cool!!!!!
-
I realise why a lot of stuff like this is for the Mac (not just the design but very low model variation being a factor undoubtedly) but it puzzles me why similar or better stuff isn't available marketed more generically to PC users.
Just because people have a sense of design doesn't mean they have to compromise everything about effective computing and move to a MacHeck, I'm trying to move out. Doesn't mean I have any less of an eye for stuff that looks nice. And I'm sure the same goes for many others - possibly a bigger market than even Mac buyers. Just a bit miffed that we get the neon-lit fan coolers instead :(

well, just take a look at what product it is and then take a look at the price. It's sick to pay such a high price for few pieces of aluminum as a notebook stand.
Ok, the price for the X-base looks a bit better because the X-base looks sturdier, and has a better cooling solution. Still, it's just a notebook stand.
I don't say that I like the look of the often sold well known laptop coolers, but in my opinion is the price for the X-base and especially for the Balmuda a rip-off. So I also understand why those products get advertised as accessories for Apple products.
There are other, less expensive, still interesting looking notebook stands:

Yes, the X-base looks interesting, but not too special either.
And for $400 you can even let produce a much better looking custom notebook stand made of aluminum. -
They may be interesting to you, but they look like their price to me in comparison. Design isn't just about which material you employ. It's about the details.
And can we can it with this - $400 is a relatively inconsequential amount for me (although - the point of this thread, I would like to avoid wastage if they don't work with heavier notebooks), especially for something that will probably stick around for several years. It may not be for you - but frankly speaking, that's irrelevant in this case as I'm the one looking to buy.
If you have alternative in the same or better design class - and in case that's misinterpreted, I mean something that has the same attention to detail in design, not something that looks the same - as the Balmudas that can support a heavy notebook, I'd appreciate suggestions - and I don't, if they're properly put together and designed with attention to detail, expect them to cost much less unless they embrace a particularly minimalist design (the Cricket approaches that, but for many reasons still no cigar). However it's the same with most things - people will say 'that costs way too much' and then go on to suggest what is frankly cheap tat.
I don't buy IKEA either. Hopefully that says it all.
Long shot: Anyone use a Balmuda LIFT with large notebooks?
