I'm looking for a headset with an extremely good microphone, one that doesn't sound too crisp or has too much bass neither pops or muffled sounds. Almost like a professional microphone (of course it isn't going to be that good, but yeah). Under $80.

I've been told that the Plantronics .655 USB Audio or the GameCom 377 (not USB) are good options.

Do you have any experience with either of these two or is there another headset that you'd recommend?

Well I don't know about those two but I currently own a pair of Astro Gaming A40's and I've had them for about two years now and get great sound and the detachable mic is great for picking up sound. It's pretty sensitive even for quiet sound and I love the things to death. If you don't like the size of them there is also the newer A30's that came out not to long ago that also have good sound and mic quality. They're a bit spendy though is the only down side especially if you buy them with the MixAmp but that was what got me to get them in the first place so I can run most of my gaming consoles and laptop through them. Really good headset all around in my opinion.

Astro stuff is good but the company is much like Razer, meaning its expensive for what you get due to the name and image.

Plantronics will sell a equal quality headset for less, there mics are also very good in my experience.

I have had a DSP-500 from Plantronics and a Pulsar 590A both performed admirably for there cost.

I'll vouch for the GameCom 377. Good mic quality...not that I did a whole lot of recording with it, but it sounds good. Overall good headset for a sub-$50 budget, too. The Razer Carcharias is of similar mic quality, although a bit more expensive too.

Astro looks nice but it is a little expensive mainly because of the name, again the same with other "gaming" headsets I guess. The Beyerdynamic MMX 2 has some interesting features I'll take a look at it. I'll keep a look out for a cheap G35. I think the Gamecom might be one cool option. How about the Creative Fatality headsets?

Is the difference between the 3.5mm and USB headsets really big? I'm not sure if the sound card in my laptop is high quality or not. Also, do you guys prefer closed or open ear headsets?

fair warning on creative products is that if any product you buy from them requires drivers get ready to not have any updated drivers in a long time if ever (still waiting on an update for my titanium card)

I prefer closed and USB - offers all the flexibility required in a headset IMO for PC use with the least hassle.

If you can get a G35 for your budget then I think that will be one of the top choices - I just haven't seen one for ~$80. The MMX 2 is a mic-d version of the DT 231, which has a decent rep in hi-fi circles. It's closed but not really that isolated (unlike the G35 for example) but it does overall offer a high degree of bang for the buck in terms of mic pickup and headphone sound quality.

I think most mics are decent, but it is the spreaker parts of it that suck.
