Hello everyone, so I've gone through 3 mice in the past 3 years or so. They were all the mini-USB mice that were probably about $10 and lasted about a year each. I am almost positive most of the time the problem is because the USB wires in the cable become dysfunctional.
I'm deciding whether to get another mouse like this or get a different kind altogether. I like the miniatures a lot because it's easier to keep in my backpack while I'm walking around campus. I also like the ones wired by USB because I don't have to worry about batteries.
I'm not too versed onto the with the sustainability/battery life of the wireless ones. I've only strayed from them because I don't want to go out and purchase batteries multiple times. Thinking about it though, I know there probably be less faults because there isn't a physical wire to get damaged.
Mostly I use the mice to play games, so if there was one with extra buttons it would be nice but not necessary considering I'm kind of preferring a miniature sized mouse. I'm open to any suggestions, but maximum of $20 is more of my comfort zone and I might go to $30 depending on the mouse.
I didn't mind spending $10 for the mice because while you get what you pay for, a year was good enough for me. Though, if I'm going to spend more on a mouse I would expect it to last longer. I just want to see what options are out there, preferably in retail stores like Micro Center or Fry's. Thank you!

Logitech - Marathon Mouse M705
Notebook size - well, sort of between a mini mouse and a full desktop mouse. Looooong battery life so wireless isn't that much of an issue. -
+1
100% agree with the Marathon Mouse. It's very ergonomic (if you're right handed that is), has 5 buttons, and battery life lasts forever. By the time you need to replace the batteries, you might be in the market for a new mouse.
Only thing is that it's outside of your $30 range. However, I think the extra money you'll spend is worth it. -
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Even though it exceeds my price range, with 3 recommendations I'm definitely going to look into it; hopefully I can even find it discounted or on sale for the price I'm looking for.
Any more suggestions are welcome! -
FWIW I've seen Amazon and NewEgg carry it for just south of $45. Maybe with the sales and discounts coming up for the back to school rush, you could probably pick one up for $30 (but don't quote me on that!)
-
@OP also be sure to check Logitechs Dented Box deals, you just might be able find a deal on one or something there.

Thanks for all the tips everyone! I'm still looking out for one around $30. How big is the mouse? I ask because it'll be tucked away in my backpack most of the time; it's not about taking up too much space but I don't want it to be too bulky because it might get damaged in my bag.
-
Oh that might be a bit of N issue. The Marathon Mouse is "big" for mobile use, it's basically desktop size. If you think about the old first gen Microsoft optical mouse, its about the same size.
-
I've had great luck with every Logitech I've owned and the Marathon Mouse seems like it would be a great fit for you.
-
Hm, so the trade off would be size...but it can be overlooked when considering the functions, build quality, and battery life. I'll have to swing by my local Fry's to really see for myself how big it is.
Pretty excited though, with such great battery life might end up using it more often than just for games; especially since it's wireless I don't have to worry about the wire's proximity when playing with the laptop on my legs. Thanks for the multiple suggestions! -
Razer Deathadder Black Edition
Why? It's amazing. Why Black Edition? For rubberized grips that lasts forever. Just add $15 to your $30 budget and you'll get yourself a great mouse not just for gaming!

If Fry's doesn't have it on display, I'm sure your local Best Buys will. At least where I am, Best Buy always has the Marathon Mouse on display.

I did not buy this one yet but this seems to be a cool one: SteelSeries World of Warcraft Cataclysm MMO Gaming Mouse. Does anyone has experience with it? Price wise it is not what you had in mind but as Alpine 7907 pointed out it could be a great gift for you
if it would suit your needs of course and if you play a lot of WOW.

I use a simple Microsoft 3500 mouse with my dv6 and love it for the price. It comes with a tiny USB receiver, battery lasts quite a while, and is compact.
It also uses BlueTrack so it will work on the great majority of surfaces, which is great for me as I often use it everywhere, including on my bed sheets / comforter or those glossy lab tables that usually screw with your mouse. No need to find a book / notepad that actually works as a mouse pad.
The M705 is larger but is specifically noted for it's amazing battery life. It also has two extra buttons that can be mapped to in most programs / games. When you're lucky you can find it for ~$30 shipped. -
Just got the M705 after so many glowing suggestions for $29.99 at Sam's Club; two minutes in and I'm loving it. The scrolling feels nice especially, not sure which mode to use yet because the smoother scrolling might give me a headache. The extra buttons are also a nice touch and it's very ergonomic as you guys have said. Also can't forget (Even though they tell you that you can) about the miniature receiver - probably going to just leave that in the slot permanently so I don't lose it, could there be any repercussions after leaving it in for such a long period?
Best of all, I can't get over the claim about the 3-year battery life. Obviously I can't test this out now but hope it holds up. Thanks for the suggestion guys, enjoying my new mouse.
EDIT: One thing that is annoying though is the left mouse click - it's a really high-pitched click whereas the right mouse click seems fine. Does this get better over time, hopefully within the week of use?
EDIT 2: Well, I figured out why the left mouse button had a higher pitched clicking noise; when I buy new things I like to leave any plastic coverings on it for awhile. I just now pulled the piece of plastic off of the left side and now the clicking is a lot more bearable, don't know how a piece of plastic increased the pitched.
I can still tell that the left mouse button is a lot more pitched than the right, is this normal? -
...I think so?
I think I know what you mean. Though I don't have it on my M705, I have the same issue with my Nano VX. I don't mind it though. You get to used it over time, and frankly I have completely forgotten about it until you brought it up. In my case, the right button has a higher pitched click than the left.
If it is in fact unusually high pitched, it might be something wrong with the switch - perhaps you could bring it back to Sam's Club and get the mouse replaced, or contact Logitech customer support and see if they will replace it. Logitech's support has been known to be very good about replacing units, even if it is out of the warranty period.
