Okay well I need a cooler for my Compal IFL90 that I ordered. I have done some research on it and I can't seem to pick one so I figured I'd ask. I am going to college and might be transporting it a bit, so a portable one would be nice. It's obviously a 15.4" notebook so it would have to fit that. I don't want to spend over $40, so what do you guys suggest?

If you can spare the time to wait, I'd recommend trying out some alternative solutions to reducing heat before you purchase a cooler. You may even find it quite bearable without one! This thread will help you out a lot. To add to that, a cheap way to lower temperatures is to prop the laptop up by using bottle caps to improve air flow, but anything of a similar shape and size would work just as well.
As far as recommendations go, I've heard that the Spire Pacific Breeze works quite well for some people, but it is a bit loud. Chaz recommended placing a pencil under the back of it to lower sound here. For a more portable (and fanless) solution, you can look at the Thermaltake iXoft pad which got some good reviews. The Vantec line of coolers are also pretty good from what I've heard. -
I think Chaz' guide is valuable but I think there is an additional step between step #1 and step #2. There's a review of a notebook cooler I read recently where the reviewer used the cooler with its fans turned on, and then without the fans on. He found that the fans added very little to the cooling power. The main factor that helped cooling was that the cooler helped keep the laptop's vents away from obstructions. So fans are not always necessary to achieve the cooling you need.
Anyway, I'm exploring fanless diy solutions in this thread. I've ordered a Sager NP2090 which you probably know is a Compal IFL90 branded by Sager. So the solutions I'm looking for should work with your machine. -
The Targus Tornado Chill Mat is a cheap cooler to consider.

there is a new targus chill mat, and it works like the zippo(i think thats waht its called), it takes air from the sides and pushes it up toward the underside of a notebook. According to targus it is 28% more efficient than the one Chaz tested.

I didn't know about the new Targus Chill Mat. Interesting cooling method.
