I'll be getting a laptop soon (the Asus G50V-A1 :D) for school and gaming. I figured that having a tablet would help me a fair bit in class to take notes and whatnot (my typing is a bit slow). And so, I'm appealing to you guys to give me some advice on what tablets are good and what isn't.

    My concerns:
    - Weight. Cannot be too heavy. My laptop is bad enough as it is
    - Good drivers and bundled software.
    - Good quality to last 2 years in a high schooler's bag
    - Price.

Wacom tablets are quite popular. Check them out.

IMO Id get a Tablet PC if you want to take it to class. Taking a laptop and a tablet just doesn't seem like a good idea.

Wow, taking notes on a laptop for high school? What happened to good 'ol pen and paper?! Man do I feel old now :p . Must be a private school if you're not worried about your stuff getting stolen.

Anyway, I would recommend a Tablet PC as well over getting a separate tablet. You'll be drawing extra power from you G50, which only has about 2 hours of battery life unless you've got an outlet handy in each of your classes and you've got time to hook everything up.

If you're set on getting a tablet, Wacoms are a good choice. I have the Bamboo myself and it's worked pretty well. When I was on the market for one, Wacoms were pretty much the only ones I felt comfortable buying due to reputation and firsthand use of one that belonged to a classmate.

As far as software, all you really need for note taking is Windows Journal which comes with Vista and XP Tablet Edition. If you want software with more features, there's MS Office OneNote, but that won't come with tablets like the Bamboo. What comes with the bamboo asides from the drivers are programs for picture editing, etc.

    Hope that helps some.

i go to a private school and they forced us all to get thinkpad tablet which sucks becasue my parent made me pay for it right after i just bought a laptop there went my summer job money but i would suggest buy a desktop and a hp tablet for that way you can game and use a tablet for school both for almot the same price as the asus notebook.

Thanks for the advice guys. It's actually a very interesting suggestion, having a tablet and a desktop. It's just that the tablet PC would be too small to do much other than being a tablet (LAN parties and such would be a challenge on 12.1") and I don't really need the power of a desktop.

But I will have Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition 2007 (with OneNote). Will the inbuilt handwriting recognition software work with it?

And yea, it's an international school so I guess its private :D

    What don't you get this:
    <embed src="http://blip.tv/play/_U_G5lvbbg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width='520' height='322' allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>

It has a integrated tablet and should be powerful enough for lan-parties XD... That thing is monstruous.

Wow, that's pretty good. Does it come with some kind of wrist pad? That looks like it could get real uncomfortable.

Neat idea but urgh... a thinkpad. I cannot think of any uglier laptops.

Wacom tablets seem the only option :D. Would you guys reckon the bamboo (A6) is too small? Should I go for the Bamboo fun (A5) for taking notes?

Look into the HP tx2500/tx2510, I love mine and plan on using it for taking to my masters classes while I have my 17in monster back at home. As for price its the cheapest tablet PC I have found and it has decent power for multitasking and light gaming. But tbh it will do very well in taking notes and light coding til I can get home to my dell, and thats all I really need it for. Oh and to put its gaming into perspective I can play UT3 all of source and alot of other semi older FPS games very well (tf2 maxed res and settings). Granted it isnt a gaming rig but it can do about better then my old x1600 as well as better then 8400m/2400.
