Ok, I'm not even sure if such a device exists. I'll describe what it is I'm looking for.

I want a device that connects up to any standard ethernet jack on the wall. It would then take that data/signal, and broadcast it wirelessly to my laptop through my laptops card.

Now, I know what you're saying. Thats a wireless router. Yes. But I want it to work for just one device. I want it to be completely self powered, batteries. And I don't want to have to set up a ton of stuff for it to work. I want it to be a mobile solution.

    Here's a scenario.
I'm at my friend's house. He doesn't have a wireless network. His house is wired. But I don't want to have to sit at the desk where his ethernet jack is. So I plug in this device into the ethernet jack, and then go off to wherever I want.

    Does anything like that exist?

I use a wireless router at my parents home and at my home. I have my laptop setup to automatically connect when I am at my house or when I am away to my parents home. You just setup the connection and thats it.The ethernet cable plugs into the router and you setup your wireless connection on your laptop and you should be good to go.
