I don't know much about computer monitors, but you can probably get more answers if you posted this in the accessories or hardware section of this forum.

    edit: It was moved

I have that same dell monitor. I use it as my second display in portrait mode. Works great and has good colors and image quality. My primary display is a 24" Dell 2407, it is an S-PVA panel and it also very good. I'd buy the U2211 again.

I have a NEC EA232WMi (just got it today), it's the LED backlit version of the 231. Either one is a good entry level IPS but the 231 is dirt cheap in some places since it's on clearance.

does the LED version get any improvement in term of screen uniformity? i saw the viewsonic one at Fry's and i kinda like it but then i see a lot of great reviews for the NEC one as well as Dell's.

If you don't mind a PVA panel, there's the Samsung F2380 here for $160. They're a bit less expensive than the Dells if you can do PVA. I just picked up a couple similar 2333Ts. They're very good.

    Isn't ghosting noticeable?

A PVA is one of the slowest refreshing panels, so if you're going to be gaming or watching video as well as photo editing an IPS is worth it.

You use your monitor for all of your interaction with the computer, and you can move it to a new computer eventually. Why buy anything less than what you actually want/need?

Well, yes. But it's just one of those things that I recommend buying quality and spending a bit more instead of going for the "cheap" option. It's worth it to wait a few weeks and save your pennies for a higher quality product. Wal*Mart is good enough for toilet paper, but I'm not going for the lowest bidder with my electronics or tools I depend on.

    I just went through this.
    At work I use a Dell U2410 & 2209WA.
Since the 2410 is too expensive, I went to all the local stores to look at monitors & shopped/researched on the web.
I almost pulled the trigger a couple of times, once at staples but the sale HP monitor was sold out (that was a blessing) in retrospet, then again on Amazon (Viewsonic) but always, always came back to Dell.
    Sooo...
I pulled the trigger on a Dell U2311. It was on sale at Dell for 249.
I pricematched it with my military discount on AAFES (no tax) so that saved $17.
    Totaly price shipped $249.
It looks better than the 2209 at work, of course nothing touches the 2410. But for $249 I am way happy.
It is matched to my new XPS15 for video editing & photography at home.
I love this monitor. So my suggestion/experience is U2311. You will not be dissappointed imo.

I've been considering the Dell U2311. It is currently $279 + free shipping. When was it $249?

I can speak much about gaming, but I've seen no ghosting on my 2333Ts while playing video. If you really want an IPS monitor maybe you should look at the U2211H. It's 21.5", but the same resolution. Occasionally you can find it for $200.

Dell was doing a different monitor special a day off its website.
Over President's Day they had the U2211. I almost pulled the plug but waited checking the website everyday.
The U2311 was offered Feb 27th.
It arrived on Friday March 4th.
It was 249, free ship +$17 state tax but did my price match so no tax.
For awhile the monitor was $319.
The do put it on sale occassionally.

Agree with the comment about getting the best monitor you can buy/afford since you use it every moment the computer is on.

I just plugged in my old old old Dell 2001FP 20" and it's much nicer having more real estate compared to my 15" screen.

Does anyone have suggestions for a 1920 x 1200 screen other than the Dell? Could be TN.

How about the Dell ST2220T 21.5-inch Multi-Touch Full HD Widescreen? Has anyone ever used it? It's IPS and currently on sale on dell.com for $289. The only thing that's holding me back from getting it is the glossy screen :)
