    Hello everyone,
I am currently looking to replace my Sennheiser HD598. The quality of the headphones is amazing, however after a year I still cannot get used to the lack of bass, and I find the open-back style not suited for my use. So I decided that I'd sell them and get a new pair of headphones (or a headset) instead.

I plan to use the headset/headphones for gaming on a desktop (with a Xonar DGX soundcard), on a laptop (with onboard SoundBlaster X-Fi mb5), and for listening to music on my phone, possibly in public. I currently do not have a microphone, I am using a cheap headset around my neck and this is far from being confortable, both for me and the people listening to me.

Which means I am looking for a circum-aural headset or hadphones, that has an analog interface (no USB nor bluetooth) compatible with mobile, and that my current sound cards can run (I do not plan on investing on a separate soundcard, not yet at least, so unless it comes with its own it has to run well with mine, or it has to be within budget
). Closed back ; and if a headset, with a removable microphone (or retractable one that almost disapears). As I may use it with people around, I'd prefer as little sound leak as possible, and possibly a sober design (no crazy LEDs and flashy colors). Confort is important too, as I'll often wear it for more than 2-3 hours at once (I also have to do online courses for my school, and I do not have speakers for my desktop so no alternative).

I am coming from an HD598, and the main problem I had with it was the lack of bass. In gaming, explosions and gunshots sound too weak ; when listening to electro music, it feels "flat", and when listening to "regular" music with basses or cellos, they sound too weak for my taste. So I'd like the replacement to be bassy enough. I am not looking for a portable subwoofer either, but I do like punchy basses that make my ears vibrate (without sacrificing too much of the mids and trebles either).

My budget is at 200€ maximum ; and if the best choice happens to be headphones, I'd like to have a bit of spare money for the microphone that I'd then have to buy (between 50 and 80€).

I did not look too much at headphones for now. Some articles catched my attention, mainly :
    -HyperX Cloud Alpha (99€)
    -ATH PG1 (99€ for a limited time, otherwise 150€)
    -Bayerdynamic Custom Game (200€)

All of them seem to have good reputation, I dont know how they compare to the HD598 in terms of audio quality and bass though. I am also not sure if the Bayerdynamic has a removable microphone, or must have the mic plugged to have sound at all.
I am not looking for a downgrade, I'd like to keep the confort and overall audio quality of the Sennheiser, but without the bass issue, and with a closed back (smaller soundstage is an obvious consequence I am aware of), which seems to be Sennheiser's thing in general, so I'll go for another brand in the future (they're really good, but just not the right thing for me).

I'll take any advice, personnal experience or reference you can give me, if my request is even doable for my budget ^^
Thanks a lot in advance :)

    Couple questions.

    In what country are you?
What exact laptop do you have? Clevo?

Of those you listed, the HyperX offers a good mix of comfort and SQ. They use good memory foam in the pads.

The ATH-PG1 is a gamerized ATH-M20x, so won't be great for actual music listening.

The Custom Game will have the widest soundstage. It's very neutral though.

The 598 is one of the GOAT headphones, when it comes to comfort, so I wouldn't expect to match it. None of these will match the overall SQ either, but they will give you more bass.

In the end, the Custom Game isn't worth double the HyperX, so I'd go with the latter.

You know there's an HD 598 CS closed back version, right?

The HD 569 is also closed, although it seems to be the same headphone as the 598 CS just with cosmetic differences.

My laptop is a Clevo P651RP-6, onboard audio is Sound Blaster X-Fi mb5.
    And I live in France.

One pair of headphones that catched my attention is the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80Ohm. The sound quality seems to be great, with good basses, and velour cushions for a similar confort as with the Sennheiser ; but I'm not sure if my onboard audio can drive it on my laptop (desktop and phone should have no problem).

I would think about the 32 ohm DT 770 instead. The 80 ohm version is questionable for portable sources ( NwAvGuy recommends a power output of 28mw @ 80 ohms) if you listen at loud volume or to dynamic music like orchestra/classical, and the bass might be underpowered.

On laptop I will mostly watch videos for school and eventualy play games. I listen to music on my phone mostly (LG V10, it has an amp for high impedence headphones), and while I listen to everything from classical to metal, I tend to have preferences for electro and dubstep which are heavier on bass (and sound really quiet with the Sennheiser).
