I would like to purchase a messenger style bag that can serve both as a laptop bag and a briefcase. I would like protection for the laptop and be able to carry some files with me. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

I think the Dell's laptop case is pretty nice. It looks something like this...

You didn't mention how big your laptop was so I just randomly chose a 17 in. But I believe Dell also sells the 15 in for it too. This case is really sturdy and tough so your laptop would be safe as well anything else you want to put in there. -
Do you mean something that looks more office type briefcase? Or just generally any messenger bag that you can also use as something to hold w/ your hand?
If interested, take a look here for a bag i'm selling. I bought it but returned the laptop i had planned to use it for.

Hey there!
What size is your laptop? That would help in the search
Here is a great thread for you to also check out:

And, www.ebags.com has some great choices, that you may want to check out.
There are many manuf's out there that make great Notebook bags:
I've linked a page for you from ebags.com that has various brands of Laptop Messenger Bags, the different kinds styles, and fabrics:

Also...if you find something you like there, you may want to do a Google search to see if you can find it cheaper elsewhere (like buy.com, Amazon) etc.
Good Luck!

I have a MBP and am also looking for a new case. Been looking at Tom Bihns and am rather liking what I see (and hear). I tad pricey but considering what I just dropped on my new Mac, its all relative. I'm also considering T-Tumi which I'll look at over the weekend. Tom Bihns is only mail order unless you live in Seattle which is a bummer -- if like me, you don't like to buy without first seeing it in your hands.....

I'm using a Wenger Messenger bag. But have used a normal briefcase and a Targus Aviators Case (heavy) before.
I would generally say stay away from computer manufacturer bags because they give away the type of laptop your carrying. Even my Wenger bag looks very much "laptop" - but its not as obvious as, for example, a Vaio bag. -
i've also been considering tom bihns. I like the empire builder bag but just not sure if i can justify 250 on the bag (cost with strap and notebook sleeve).
