My DiNovo Desktop has a USB bluetooth receiver the size of a rather small flash drive which then plugs into a dock. So it can be easily plugged into a desktop without reaching around for a port, but then unplugged from that dock for use with your notebook. It's pretty convenient, but I don't know if it's available for any mouse only models.

If you're not using built in bluetooth, though, does it really matter if it's wireless or not? I can see where if you keep your notebook on your lap and the mouse on another surface it would be more comfortable, but you should ask yourself if it's really necessary. Otherwise, you're still plugging in a dongle, why not have a cord?

There are so many more options for wired mice. For truly plugless mice you're limited to bluetooth mice from Logitech or Razer (as Pro Click, does Microsoft offer one?), for wireless mice you have those two plus Microsoft and Kensington, but you're still limited in styles. Tethered mice add on a couple brands in addition to more styles for the aforementioned brands.

No cordless mouse is going to be as responsive as it's corded sibling.

That is true, if you want a true gaming mouse, you will have to deal with a cord. I use a Logitech G9 which is I love and would highly reckmend. If you are looking for a cordless gaming mouse than I would look at the Logitech G7, which is just a cordless verision of the G5. It does lag a little, but unless you're a hardcore gamer you probably won't notice.
