So over the last few months I've really been wanting to buy a 22" Widescreen LCD monitor for my laptop. I play a lot of games and also have a 360 that I'd want to hook up to it. There are a lot of deals that basically put brands like Acer and Westinghouse in the 175-200 dollar range, which is all my budget can really afford anyways. The quality on these monitors is supposed to be alright from what I can tell. The general specs are 1680x1050 16:10 Widescreen, with 700:1 Contrast ratio, and 5ms Response time.

However, by sheer luck, I came across a CRT monitor on ebay and after looking over the internet for what I could find, I think I might be changing my mind. The monitor in question is the 24" widescreen Sony FW900 CRT monitor. On ebay I could buy it outright for local pickup in NJ for 230 bucks.

From what I've read, CRT displays seem to offer better performance for gaming so I'm looking for opinions both on the Sony monitor specifically, and whether it's worth it to get a 3 year old 100lb CRT behemoth over a relatively newer LCD model.

I've never heard of widescreen CRT's before, but for that price, if it's in working condition, it's probably a steal and would be a wise buy...if you have the space to put it, as you mentioned, it is a behemoth. I'm curious as to what kind of resolutions it can run?

as for an LCD, I honestly would only consider a high quality Samsung or LG. there aren't very many good 22" LCD's out there...so I would actually recommend you look at something like the Samsung 205BW. yes, it's only 20", but it's a higher quality screen then any of the 22" out there.

if you aren't ready for that, I'd say save up your money till you have 2x what you currently can swing. then you can get something worth the money! :)

One advantage of CRT over LCD is if you change resolution, the picture and text still look good with CRT. With LCD, you very much have to use it with its native resolution. Otherwise, it may look funny.

As you may have to lower your resolution in order to play your games smoothly, I would say CRT has an advantage over LCD in your case.

Theres a page with the details of the CRT monitor for anyone who's interested. I'm going out today to look around at some LCDs and such in stores to see them firsthand. I'll post back later if I've come to a decision. Thanks for the help so far guys.
