Some of the buttons are getting hard to engage, so it is time to consider what to get next within a few months. Any suggestions?

If you are used to the MX518, the G5 would be the logical choice. If you feel like a change, the Razer Deathadder is always anoption.

The Logitech G5 and G7 are the logical choices if you want to keep the same basic shape of the MX518. The G7 is almost identical to the G5, except wireless instead of wired.

If you're not afraid to try a different shape, the G9 is excellent, and has 3 interchangeable grips for different purposes, and can be very comfortable. I've never had firsthand experience with Razer mice, but they seem to leave favorable impressions.

The Microsoft Sidewinder is another good, solid, gaming-grade wired mouse. It's a good size, and the only issue I ever found with it is the vertical placement of the thumb buttons, but that's only because I have huge hands. :p

I find that the G9 is very comfortable as well. I just don't like how hard it is to press the middle mouse button down on the scroll wheel.

Biggest difference between the two is the DPI. Past that it's basically ergonomics, with the G9 featuring customizable and removable grips, a unique weighting system, and a nifty LED system.

The G9 is a completely different shape. The original G5 and G7 are very similar to the 518 except they're missing one of the left thumb buttons.

Make sure you pick up the G5 v2. (The blue one). It's got both thumb buttons and slightly higher specs than the original (grey/orange).

Oh, btw. I recommend the G5 because of the insanely large mouse feet. I've never had a smoother feel on a cloth mouse pad or hard surface. My 518 isn't nearly as smooth unless it's on a hard mouse pad or table.

Personally I would go for the G5 over the G9, if I was looking at wired mice. The G9 has a flat shape, where as the G5 has a bit of an arch. The flat shape literally bothered my hand and made it uncomfortable for me. I need a little bit of an arch to my mice, but not too much like the Mx Revolution.

As I mentioned previously, the G9 comes with customized grips that allow gamers to choose which grip feels best for them. Purchasing a G9 automatically gives you two grips to choose from as they are included in the packaging. There is a third grip available, but that one you have to buy separately off Logitech's site. The fact is, there is no other mouse on the market that allows for such "fine tuning" when it comes to the ergonomics of a mouse.

Strange because it actually feels better in my hand than my old MS mouse that had a high back and was aching my hand! I dont have a hurting hand anymore!

OK, I understand it comes with various grips, but do any of them have an arch like other mice?

Like a basic Microsoft Intellimouse($10 to $20) for example. Or the G5 as another example. Most mice have some what of an arch, while some have an extreme arch like the Mx Revolution.

I may be missing something but the photos of the G9 seems to make it much larger than the G5 in width(and maybe length?)
