    I have a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-832S, which doesn't recognize any DVD.
As I bought the Asus U5A notebook, 6 months ago, I could read and play movies from the DVDs, but then I have'nt used that feature for a while.
As I tryed to burn a dvd this morning, I realized that the driver can read
only cd-rom, while when I insert a dvd it behaves as the driver were empty.
Does anybody have an idea of what happened and how can I fix that?
    Thank you in advance.

Happen to me with my Asus Z70VA DVDRW drive. I contact Asus and sent them the drive back for a replacement. Got the drive back in 1 and a half day and problem solve. You should contact Asus if you still have warranty.

Your drive is probably dead. You can try flashingj a newer firmware. Sometimes it may be "fixed". I have a TSST corp with the same problem. Gave up and got a $7 LG dvd burner on sale at CompUSA. Going to stick it into an enclosure. You can try contacting Panasonic and see if they can replace it for you.

The U5A... A rare model indeed, never even made it to the US. Very similar to my Z33, although I have a TSST optical drive.

If it's an Ensemble (preconfigured) I would contact Asus, otherwise your dealer or maybe even Panasonic.

I called ASUS Italy twice, on December the 27th 2006, and today.
The first time they told me I'd better to call back after the holydays, and they
would have picked up my DVD driver.
Today they told me I must ship the whole notebook, and I got very upset
as I'm leaving for a two month's bussiness journery in a few of days,
and I brought this problem to their attention as I called on December the 27th.
    A very bad service, definitely.

Does anybody know a compatible driver I can buy myself?
    Thank you in advance.
