I want to buy a keyboard to use when gaming. I just bought a new 23" Monitor that I'll be using for my Xbox and want to 'dock' my laptop for gaming. I already have a Razer DeathAdder that I use when gaming and also use a Sennheiser Headset. The idea is I'll just set my laptop on the cooler, connect my monitor, keyboard, mouse, and 3.5mm headset jacks and it'll be no different than using a desktop (with the exception that my laptop is old).

The other brains behind this idea is once I do finally build a desktop (financially, hopefully in about a year), I'll be set with my hardware accessories and only have to focus on the computer hardware costs. Even if not and I finally replace my laptop with a Clevo that I want oh so bad, I can just dock that too for gaming.

I've narrowed it down to either the Sidewinder X4 which the reviews seem to be amazing for and the $46 price tag is hard to beat. I think the only downside is that it has Red LEDs instead of Blue which I prefer to match my DeathAdder (plus when I build a desktop in the future, I'm going blue for fans). Or the Logitech G110 which appears to have much more tactile looking keys however reviews seem to have both keyboards on equal ground for that matter. It has more macro keys, blue LEDs :) , and a few extra nice features that I may or may not use like the onboard sound card. Plus $70 for it having all the features I've been looking for is not bad either. I could really careless about having a Mechanical Keyboard to be honest. I don't think it will matter much since I've seen non-mechanical work perfectly fine for me in the past and last over 5 years no problem.

As far as games I play, I'm only really into StarCraft II and trying to play that or any game really on my Studio 1535 keyboard is just frustrating (even though I am great at typing on it). I also have a few other games I touch into once in every long while like Battlefield 2. I plan to buy a Wired Xbox 360 Controller at the same time for games that support it (yes, I know, M&K > gamepad, but I suck with M&K compared to gamepad and a gamepad would be great for vehicles in BF and my GTA games).

From personal experience or your own knowledge, which keyboard do you recomend? Microsoft Sidewinder X4 or Logitech G110?

    Thanx!

Hm, no responses, well, apparently the G110 just went on sale for $10 off today so I think I will buy that unless anyone has any recomendations against.

I used to have a similar setup before I built a desktop as well. IMO the X4 is much better value for money, and the G110 is too wide with all the macro keys.

X4. shorter travel - more responsive. NKRO.

However, personally never a fan of Logitech's rubber-dome action, so YMMV. Personally I feel that the X4 is an excellent overall compromise of cost, long-term performance (which to me is better than many mechanicals after significant wear) and features. I simply happen to prefer the X6 as I like the numpad on the left hand side.

I have a Microsoft SideWinder X6 (X4's bigger sibling) and it's a decent keyboard. I purchased it almost two years ago so the keys have already glossed over and the WASD keys are showing visible paint chipping wear. Otherwise it's a pretty comfortable keyboard to type on. You can't really go wrong with the Logitech either though.

One thing you might want to consider, Logitech's Customer Service > Microsoft's Customer Service.

I think you can. The Logitechs are way more prone to key wear and start binding after wear (OK, we're talking potentially years of light use before it's consistently felt, but still).

    That is true though.

Well that's probably bound to happen with ANY keyboard. Luckily I haven't gotten their with my X6 yet. As an FPS gamer, the WASD keys take the most wear and tear (and abuse) from me. :p

I mean it happens (much) sooner with Logitech key action. The Sidewinders are excellent in this respect. One thing I do wish for the SW's is if I can get spare WASD clusters. All of my X6's, like yours undoubtedly, have the legend of those keys mostly scratched off.

I have the X4 and am very happy with it. I was looking at the G110 too, but The price of the X4 was much cheaper so I went with that. I haven't used the macro feature yet, but so far its a nice keyboard.
