I'm currently on the lookout for a scanner to exclusively pair up with my notebook when I need to do projects away from home (for obvious reasons, I am hesitant to lug my CanoScan with me). Anyway, I'm looking for something that is affordable yet effective ... and while the two usually don't go hand-in-hand, my friend recommended the Microtek ScanMaker 3k series. He said it has been up to par with the Scanjets, but I am still doubtful.

Now, if anyone here has any personal experience with this brand, I would welcome any suggestions. I need that "second opinion" before I go ahead with any decision.

    As of this moment:
    PROS:
    - really affordable
    - basic features are more than enough for my needs

    CONS:
    - I know next to nothing about this brand or the reputation/lifespan of its scanners
