Basically I'm looking for some kind of bluetooth laptop pointing device for one hand with as many configurable buttons as possible so that I can operate my laptop while leaning half off my chair with my feet on the table and my hands dragging on the floor... (seems to be my working position of choice after a couple of hours at the computer)![]()
Often I have to do quite repetitive tasks or go through lots of data or folders and it be nice if I could leave my chair and pace the room while doing it or even go and have a nap on my bed all while leaving the laptop on the table!
Anyone got any ideas?!!
I saw the zeemote bluetooth joystick for mobile phones and something like that adapted to operate the cursor with a few more buttons would be perfect!

Perhaps some trackballs?
-
I'll suggest a trackball as well. I'm not familiar enough with them to recommend a particular model, but some of them come with more buttons than you'll know what to do with, and usually don't take more than a finger or two to operate.
-
Trackballs look great, but all the ones I've seen seem too big to be held in one hand. They seem designed to operate with one hand but placed in a fixed position.
I'm looking for something which fits snugly in my hand and I can just operate from whereever my hand happens to be; on the desk, on the floor, in my pocket while I'm pacing the room (!) etc...
If the zeemote had a mini trackball on it that would be perfect.
EDIT:
Having said that the trackball you linked to does look very nice. I think I could use that at home with my desktop, but I wouldn't take it traveling with my laptop. -
paper_wastage Beat this 7x7x7 Cube
i have Amazon.com: Logitech Trackman Wheel Optical (Silver): Electronics which is basically the wired (older) version
it's not bad... its meant to be plaed on the table, and you place your hand on it and move the ball... -
This looks right up your alley; a handheld trackball device with a trigger mechanism for clicking, as well as left and right click buttons. Hell, I kinda want one now...only drawback is that it's wired.

You could try this:
Tobii PCEye is a stand alone Eye Control Device for Personal Computers
seems to be like a kinect for your eyes.
Those that can benefit most from the PCEye include:
1. with limited motor skills due to ALS
2. Individuals with spinal cord injuries
3. Those suffering from certain neurological disorders.
4. The extremely lazy! -
@crayonyes - thanks for the suggestions, I had a look at the wireless trackball on amazon, unfortunately it came with some very bad reviews... also it doesn't have enough buttons... the other device, has too many buttons!
I have this fantasy of a very small wireless joystick like device that is contoured to the hand, with a button for every finger and a trackball for the thumb at the top... maybe I'll have to design it myself. Could throw in a bit of direction/motion sensing ala wiimote as well... Something like a cross between a chorded keyboard and the zeemote.
@wave
Actually in my quest for the perfect device I quickly came across a bunch of sites that were selling specialised devices for people with paraplegia etc. Didn't see that one though which looks almost made for the mass market, much more slick and consumer friendly. Made me think I should be a little more grateful that I can sit up and use a mouse... to be fair I really want something that I can use with the minimum of motion, I want to control the computer with as little excess movement as possible, on the other hand I will quite likely be pacing up and down the room as I do it.
One thing I noticed on all the sites I saw though was how unbelievably expensive the tech is for any specialised equipment for people with disabilities. I'm mean serious prices for tens of thousands of dollars. In some of the equipment I doubt the tech is much more complicated than (even as complicated as) a kinect or playstation move... it shows how powerful economies of scale are. -
nia Game Controller - OCZ
Functions with brainwaves. Are those still available after few hours of work?
Workmate bought one in ~50% sale couple weeks ago, just for fun. -
the iPazzport is the perfect solution, and it can operate vertically like holding a remote. and when you need to type, it's there!
I'm aiming at the bluetooth one myself -
Maybe something like this.
MX Air? Rechargeable Cordless Air Mouse -
@klf Now brainwave controllers would be just perfect, and they do actually exist already so shouldn't be too long till they hit the market for real?!
@crayoneyes The problem with too many buttons is that I don't want to have to look at the device to make sure I press the right one... yes I am that lazy.
@inap As for the MX Air, at first I though that was a hoax too, an "air mouse?!", but it would be good if I could control everything, mouse movement etc through waving it about in the air.
Which brings me to a possible solution, a little outside of the box:
Using a wiimote as a mouse on pc!
I don't have wii, so I don't know how responsive it is, but that could work really well...
Apparently you can use a PS3 6axis with a PC too although I haven't seen it used as a mouse yet. I like driving games too so a 6axis is probably the closest thing I'm ever going to get to a portable driving wheel. (I'm going to be traveling about with whatever I buy, so portability is important too)
Minimum hand movement bluetooth mouse replacement for lazy git? (zeemote?)
