So I bought a cooler for my overclocked notebook, and I figured it will work pretty darn well considering the fan is almost the size of my laptop.. Don't be fooled. These things SUCK. with a whopping 400RPM's, it's about as good as a 2" riser, and something to keep your legs from burning. other than that, it's useless.
BUT since my warranty expired already on it, is there any volt mods I can do to it to speed up the fan, or perhaps a slim 200mm replacement that I can put in? This thing is only usb powered, but I can wire in a seperate power supply if needed.
I've even run on stock settings, and CONSTANTLY find my GPU (go 7800GTX) hitting about 92* before it decides to throttle the GPU, and make my games super slow after about 2 minutes.
On a side note, I heard the risks of going from stock to AS5 cooling, and I read about copper shims, but I've heard stories go both ways on that. Am I doing something wrong?

The problem more than the cooler seems to be that the cooler you choose is not right for the notebook. I can pretty safely say that every cooler with a 200mm fan has the fan in the middle. The Dell e170 being as large as it is (17") and the fans being on the top back corners cannot be hit by the fan due to the poor alignment.

Yeah, I looked at a bunch of em, and the only ones that had fans near the back were tiny little fans that sat vertically on a riser, and those only move about 25cfm, but other than that, I think all of em have them in the middle for the most part..

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
there is the U series from cooler master, you can put the fans anywhere you want, try to look at the U3
what you can do is to try to get several 120mm fans and replace the 200mm, basically you are going to need some way to glue then, and to modify a cable to support either an USB connector or power outlet.
I would simply sell the cooler and buy another -
You could consider a pair of these hooked to the cooler where your fan intakes are, no guarantees it will cool as they arnt the most powerful but its worth a shot.

Also do you clean the dust out of your fans? -
I haven't cleaned my fans in about 3 months, as you pretty much have to disassemble the whole thing.. It's about as involved as a GPU swap.
**EDIT** looking @ the product, I could probably make one, but I don't know the max amp rating for the usb... I have some tower fans laying around, but I don't know if the laptop would have enough juice to pump it at a beneficial speed..... Anyone have experience with daisychaining usb for 10v power?
**EDIT AGAIN!** Just noticed you're in Japan; Just wanted to say BE SAFE!! -
I think its half an amp but google should clarify that. If you use a Outlet to USB adapter you can get a whole amp out of it if you choose the right one.
