If you're looking for just a simple adapter you'll probably need a HDMI to DVI adapter and then probably a DVI to VGA adapter if that's even possible. I'm assuming you have a monitor that only has VGA?

Yeah unfortunately how I mentioned above is probably the only way you could try. I don't know if it will even work with all those adapters though. I know it's not ideal, but you may want to look at a new monitor. Xmas gift maybe?

I'll have to agree with MasterRevan on just getting a new monitor, by the time you buy all the adapters you'll be needing your half way to the price of a better one. Check craiglist for a used one.

Plus going from HDMI to VGA your going to lose all your resolution any way.

HDMI to DVI adapters work because it is the same digital signal. DVI to VGA adapters work if the DVI output also has the analog component. On desktops most do, but on laptops with DVI, no. So going HDMI to VGA is impossible.

If your computer only has HDMI out, and your monitor only has VGA in, you need to either buy a digital to analog converter box, or buy a new monitor. Buying a new monitor is the wiser course of action.

To go from digital to analog or analog to digital you will need a converter not just an adapter. They can be expensive and also quality may suffer as a result.

Unless the monitor is very nice, getting a new monitor may not be a bad course of action.

If you do want to get the converter try something from Monoprice, they almost always have the best prices for that kind of stuff.

That adapter converts the signal. It's an all in one, and cheaper. It's not 100% guaranteed to work with everything, and if you read the product description and reviews, it will fit his needs most likely.

I didnt say it wouldnt work, that "adapter" is a converter. I was stating regular adapters will not work.

I just linked an example from monoprice, not the lowest price product.

Here is one for $30 that does the audio + video and also has a power supply so that alone could prevent a lot of issues that may occur with an unpowered adapter (and I have seen tons of them on WSGF)

I would just buy a new monitor instead of trying to go through the headache of converting analog to digital (VGA to HDMI). I have tried to do this myself and I actually stopped my efforts because of the cost and troubleshooting time to no avail.
