Okay, so I've looked and looked and looked, and I can't find any real information about different notebook locks. As the cost of picking a bad one is fairly steep (heh), I'd like to pick the right one the first time.
I'm going off to college next year, and want something to lock my laptop down in the dorms. Actually, I'll be locking down my docking station, and then just docking and locking the laptop to it. I'll be leaving the docking station sitting on my desk at all times, and if possible, my laptop as well. I'd like to get a lock that(in order of importance):
A) is unbreakable. I know that this is fairly impossible, so I'd like the next best thing.
B) has a guarantee. I've seen that Kensington offers a guarantee on one of their locks up to $1500 for the cost of the laptop if it gets stolen. Unfortunately, mine cost almost double that. Does anyone else offer a guarantee like that?
C) I'm debating whether an alarm would be useful or not. If it works when it needs to work and is quiet the other 99.9% of the time, I think it would be great to have. Even if the guy has already taken my laptop and is sneaking out of my room, it would alert any passerby. I just don't want something that will go haywire and go off at 4 in the morning, waking both my roomate and myself up, and (assuming the alarm would be loud enough) the next door neighbors as well.
Combo locks are preferable, as then I don't have to carry around a set of keys, but this is really the least important preference on my list.
What can you guys tell me about laptop locks?

The weak link in the security is the small lock hole in your laptop. It is easy to break the lock head out of it. So getting a bigger stronger lock wont help much. For insurance I would look to see if you can get a proper insurance from an insurance company. I have heared bad things about insurance that come with locks and such things.

A few thoughts:
1. You need to have something secure to fix the lock to. Maybe a couple of times around a table leg, but desks often don't include a convenient way for fixing a security cable.
2. How strong is the locking slot on your notebook? It there some solid metal behind the plastic?
3. There's a lot to be said in favour of a drawer with a good lock and put your computer into that.

The most secure notebook lock would be the Club for cars. You can use it smack the theif in the head when you catch them stealing it.
Notebook locks won't stop someone who really wants your laptop. All they do is deter people who walk by or when they do a grab and run cause some noise.
The best thing to do in the dorm is just to make sure things of value aren't in plain sight. I haven't heard of many break-ins in dorms(at least where I live) so just lock up when you leave. Before you leave put your laptop under the pile of "used special socks/towels" and I'm willing to bet no one will touch your laptop(hell you won't even want to touch it).
Besides you're more likely to get jumped at night and your laptop stolen then from a break in. -

I do see metal behind the plastic on my docking station, but it seems like you're all saying that I should just get a cheap lock? I'm only really worried about if I'm out and my roomate leaves the dormroom open for like... 5 minutes. That's why I'm thinking of getting one of the alarmed ones, because first, they have to try to break the lock/cut the cable, and when they do, the alarm goes off, and hopefully said roomate or someone else I know would hear my alarm and stop the guy... I'm not really looking at a lock as a long term security device in a public place, but more just a "don't just slip in my room, pick up a laptop, and leave" sort of thing.
Do you guys have specific suggestions, or how have the locks you've tried worked?
