I intend to use a Dell Precision M6500 as one of my main home machines, and I plan to use it in conjunction with a 3007WFP or an ACD30 (more likely) in a lid-open configuration. The machines are due to turn up sometime next month, but I'd like to start looking for accessory options.

Therefore on the lookout for a lifting stand, and the idea is also to keep things as clean-looking as possble. I'm currently looking at the Balmuda Lift as the prime candidate. However, it's not just that it's specifically engineered for Macbook Pros and that a higher weight on it might be an issue in the long term - but it's also that I'm not actually sure a round base works best, visually speaking, with the M6500.

What are my other options for a stand which tilts the unit and lifts the screen to be usable alongside a 30-inch monitor, looks good combined with the M6500 + ACD, and has some degree of thought-out cable management? A few hundred dollars is not an issue - cleanest, most stylish look and good utility are more important than cost.

Vogelbung - did you ever find a good solution?

I've got a heavy 17" laptop (Sager NP9280) and I'm in search of a good stand for it.

(By the way, for me, economical is good, style/design is secondary... I appreciate design & quality, but I've got 5 mouths to feed besides my own!)

No I didn't to be honest - I was still looking, until I replaced the M6500's wholesale. The 8740W's are in their respective docking stations/stands, and the fact that they're far more utilitarian than the Dell M6500's means that design isn't such a consideration anymore.

There are a whole bunch of lifting stands if design isn't a consideration and cost is. Not knowing your budget, the Lenovo Essential Stand is for example a universal stand which takes most notebooks.

Does the notebook have to be "useable" on the stand. What I mean by that is do you plan to use its touch pad/keyboard

With a lifting stand, usually the purpose is to raise the screen to the height of an accompanying monitor - so the touchpad/keyboard are not in use. It can also serve to make slightly more space usable on the desk.

Doesn't Apple offer a device that does that? I'm pretty sure I saw just the thing in a periodical once. Can't remember when or which one though.

Check out the Dell e-CRT... It can hold some serious weight. Should be able to hold the 3007WFP, while you rest the laptop below it. considering it is meant for CRT monitors. Keep in mind it does not include the dock.

FYI, look on ebay you can find the genuine stand for much less. Looks very stylish and fits the Dell industrial design.

Nevermind, just noticed he wants access to the KB/mouse etc. I will keep it up anyways just in case

There are a lot of third party options, but the heaviest Apple is 3Kgs. So a Sager would be at the 'bleeding edge' end of what a for-Apple stand is designed to hold - and some actually start to sag a little when asked to hold the 4Kg Dell. I can't imagine a carbuncular 'ton of bricks' Sager being any better.

Apple probably wouldn't offer it either, as if they did they'd face complaints that their POS's overheat while on a stand with the lid closed. Keeping it third party they can deflect such issues that would not be acceptable on any other supposedly 'pro' piece of hardware.

I'm assuming the OP actually wants to raise the machine so I'm not mentioning stands like the Dell e-crt.
