Any recommendations on a mouse or trackball device that could be used when sitting back in a recliner with a small netbook (I.e., no hard surface, but something other than the built-in touchpad)?

I was thinking about a cordless trackball, but I don't think that they come with small nano USB receivers.

I can't actually recommend it because I don't own one, but there are those Microsoft mice with "BlueTrack". They claim to work on any surface, even carpet.

I have the Microsoft Mobile Mouse 6000 with BlueTrack Technology...I love it! :D

And, that may work for you! I use it with both my Lappy and Netbook. And, yes..it works "just about everywhere"

A trackball is definitely the easiest solution for that.

Personally, when I'm on the couch, recliner or bed, I just use my DeathAdder mouse and rest my hard-surface eXactMat on the armrest, so the mouse has a surface to track on. Any hard mouse pad will work for this.

On an easy chair, trackball + hotkeys.

The Logitech MX Air is another option - you don't even need a surface to use it.

    Or the wiimote :D

but I just want to say that while the touchpad may be a pain with stock drivers, if you get mullti touch gestures working on it I find using the touchpad is actually faster/easier than even a mouse for normal computer stuff.

2 finger scroll, 3 finger forward/back stuff like that.

The 1000H supports it stock and I never even used that nice logitech nano mouse I bought because of it.

I use the Logitech VX Nano exclusively with my laptop on a non leather lazyboy chair and it works like a charm. No problems with gaming either.

Isn't functionality like that more than just driver based? It would be sweet to have that but isn't it hardware based also?

Pretty much any Synaptics touchpad has the necessary hardware; it's a question of having the right drivers installed.

i just traded my MS mobile 6000 with blutrack for the razer orochi to get rid of the usb connector and am regretting it. the orochi stutters like mad on my couch while the MS mouse worked perfectly. the vx nano that my wife confiscated from me also worked well on the same surface.
