I'm looking for a mousepad that's not too big, something the size of a paper ie 8.5" x 11". It can be slightly bigger, 9x12.

Something around $20 would be good but it can be a little more if it's really that good.

I don't need a hand rest but that'd be a plus, and the "control" and "speed" sides would be great but not necessary.

    Thanks in advance.

Edit: I forgot to add that palms seem to sweat sometimes, hopefully mousepad can avoid collecting sweat so I don't have to wipe it.

If you want a soft pad, check out the Razer Goliathus, it's available in several different sizes and either a smooth Speed texture or rougher Control texture. There's also the SteelSeries QcK line of mousepads, which are also available in multiple sizes, but only one surface texture.

If you prefer a hard surface, the aluminum Razer eXactMat is discontinued, but it's just about the size you're looking for and has reversible Speed/Control sides. The Vespula is the replacement model, and is more or less the same except it's made of rigid plastic instead of aluminum.

Will the hard surface ones collect sweat? I prefer a harder one but I'd hate having to wipe sweat off half way playing some game.

Besides that, is soft/hard pad better? or it's pretty much personal preference?

    Thanks

my eXactmat doesn't collect much sweat. it would probably collect even less if u use the wrist pad that comes with it.

hard or soft? pretty hard question. i've always used soft pads in the past. my whole 15+ odd years of computing.

my Razer eXactmat is the first hard pad i've ever had, and from day one, i was completely sold. i just love everything about it and think it fits my needs perfectly. i love the consistency and peace of mind it gives me. keep in mind though that the eXactmat is discontinued and highly praised, so another hard mat might not have provided me with the same experience.

I was going to actually get that awhile back but never did ... now can't find it anywhere.

Any other suggestions that are similar to that one? I saw the Razer Vespula, that looked similar to the eXactmat.

The Vespula is the eXactMat's replacement. It's the same thing, just made of rigid plastic instead of aluminum. Same speed/control sides, wrist pad and all that. I have both, and functionally there's really no difference. The Vespula is lighter and isn't as cold to the touch.

I've been searching for a mousepad for quite awhile, and I came to the conclusion that hard mousepads are better for various reasons. One of which is: laser mice tend to prefer hard over soft mousepads due to soft mousepads flexing and throwing the sensor off.

Another thing to consider about soft mousepads is that if your hand sweats a lot, the sweat can soak into your mat and soil it quicker, making you have to replace the mousepad sooner. With a hard mat, all you need to do is take a towel and wipe any dust/sweat off.

That being said, I've done some research, and the Razer Scarab seems to be the best out of the bunch. It has only one side, which I see as a plus, because you don't have to constantly swap sides and get used to using 2 different surfaces. The size of the mousepad isn't too big either.

    Thanks for the suggestions Juanderful.

Right now I'm using a plastic mat that I got from the bottom of a shopping bag haha. It's been decent to me, minus the random bumps and stuff on it.... I'm also using the Razer DeathAdder as a mouse.

Anyone have any comments on the Scarab vs the Vespula?
Is the Scarab/Vespula's surface the same type of material? ie Hard Plastic?

Anyone have any comments about the Steelseries Qck?

If I find an eXactmat somewhere, should I get that instead?

    No problem ^^

Going by the descriptions on the Razer website, the surface on the Scarab seems to be built differently than the Vespula. The Vespula seems to just be using Razer's standard speed/control coating that they use on all of their other mousepads. The Scarab on the other hand, is a direct replacement to Razer's Destructor pad, which used what they called their "Fractal" surface coating. Now with the Scarab, the technology has been improved to what is now called the "Fractal 2.0" surface coating.

Secondly, there seems to be some issues with both the Vespula and eXactmat when using with laser mice.

As for the Steelseries Qck series, those seem to be tried and proven mousepads, but again, being soft mousepads, they come with the problems I stated in my other post, which can be seen from some of the reviews on Amazon. Though it is only $10USD, so it won't be too costly to replace.

In all, I'd still go with the Scarab.

the Vespula is the replacement for the eXactmat. the eXactmat was made of a solid piece of aluminum. it's alot more solid and is cool to the touch compared to Vespula's plastic body.

The vespula is basically Razers way of making the ExactMat more profitable.
I would avoid the vespula, it has a cheap build quality.

I would strongly recommend to get WOW!PAD.. it's extremely thin and very comfortable, plus it meets your size requirement (8.5'').. they have different formats, not only round ones. See it in action on my desk here.

I would also advise against the Vespula. Just bad quality, really. The Scarab does look fairly nice though.

"Build quality"? The entire product is one piece of rigid plastic. No moving parts at all :p

    Haha, true. :D
But my vespula got worn out fairly quickly though. And those little skinny rubber feet were annoying. Did not keep the mat in the same place at all.

that really sucks if all those negatives are true about the Vespula cuz the eXactmat is such a great product. i'm glad i got it right the first time and bit the bullet on my eXactmat.

It was true about mine. I don't know if I said it in this thread, but the exactmat was one of the best mats I've ever used. It is of very high quality.

Wow so many negatives on the Vespula ... guess I won't get that ...

I guess I'll have to go find an old old shop and see if they have an eXactmat heh

Any comments on Scarab? I know Juanderful likes it so far.

Here's my humble contribution: Silicon Rubber Washable Mice Mouse Pad Mat Mousepad New | eBay

    What I like about it:

    1. Really thin (can put it between my laptop keyboard & screen for transportation)
    2. Anti-slip backing (unmovable once it is on the table!)
    3. Black (matches my lenovo laptop)
    4. Rubberized front
    5. Cheap!

Since it is so cheap, I bought 5 pcs and passed them to the rest of my family members to use.

Unfortunately it is only 21.5 x 17.5 cm, which is not what you are looking for, right?

    Cheers!

If you want something that is essentially a cheaper version of the Vespula and not too large (10x8.5), might I suggest the func 1030?

It is a hard plastic mouse surface with dual sides, speed and control, and rests on a rubber base. Since it is a plastic mouse pad, it is very easy to clean.

It's sold on Amazon and has an average review of 5 stars:
Amazon.com: FUNC INDUSTRIES Mouse Surface 1030 Mousepad Black: Electronics

Note: One reviewer mentions it doesn't work with his (Wolf King Trooper???) laser mouse, but it works perfectly with the majority of laser mice (logitech g500, g9x, etc.).

No longer sold on newegg, but the reviews are still there. Each version of it happens to also have an average review of 5 stars on newegg:
    Newegg.com - fUnc 1030 SU-MBA-BK Mouse Pad
    Newegg.com - fUnc SU-BK-BK Surface 1030 Black Base Mousepad
    Newegg.com - fUnc SU-OR-BL Surface 1030 Mouse Pad

as a gamer, i would definitely stay away from that pad if i wanted optimal gaming performance.
those Func pads actually look pretty nice. i like how they come with some cable management for your mouse.
