It is by far the best mouse I've ever used, but I know my current Logitech VX Revolution won't last forever. When it finally does go kaput, I want to know what to replace it with. Can you help?

    Some details:
    • Connectivity: so long as it’s wireless, I’m happy. BT or dongle, doesn’t matter.
    • Buttons: it MUST have two thumb buttons like the VX (I use these to navigate/close tabs). Would like the zoom buttons (for sound volume) but I could go without.
    • Size/shape: the VX was my goldilocks mouse in size and shape. Willing to try something similar, though it’s daily use so it’d better be good. :)
    • Price: Whatever, really. Hell, if I could find another VX for under $100, I'd buy another.

Worth looking into the Logitech Marathon Mouse M705:

It has all the 4 features you're looking for, and it looks pretty similar to the VX Revolution, sans the Zoom buttons.

I own one, so I can definitely confirm the above, except for the size. I don't know if it's larger or smaller, only that the form factor looks quite similar.

FWIW, I've seen it on display at a few Best Buys and Future Shops in the Lower Mainland, so you can demo it there.

Brilliant! Thanks Vancouverite. :) I remember looking a couple of years ago and coming across the horrid Nano - this seems like a much better successor. Shame about the zoom buttons being gone, but it's a sacrifice I will need to make when the time comes. Cheers again.

    +1.

I bought the Marathon and its keyboard in a combo over half a year ago. Both still hold their charge, and I'm not even terribly diligent in turning them off at night. The keyboard still has a full battery bar.

If anyone current or previous owners of the VX and the Marathon see this thread, could you please comment with any comparisons?

Well, if zooming is a very common function you use, most applications allow the use of the Shift + scroll wheel action to zoom. I use it very frequently as well, and have become accustomed to this combo - I've never had a mouse with a zoom function so I don't know how much you'll really miss the zoom buttons :)

FWIW I have the exact same combo you mentioned, the MK 710 I think it's called?

The mouse is still on the out of the box batteries, and says that it has about 700+ days left, same for the mouse. I never turn them off.

Not for zoom, but I use it for volume which is very handy in my office environment. :)

I wonder if I could use the strange touch-button near the thumb as a modifier, touch+scroll for volume... Hmmmm...

You can use the forward/back buttons for volume control, instead.

I've lost quite a few forum posts by accidentally hitting the back button, so the first thing I do with a new mouse is disable those or give them a different function.

Anyway, I have 2 Logitech M705 mice as my main mice, so you already understand what I think about this model. An almost perfect mouse, IMO.

Regarding your question - it seems you can't use the thumb button as a modifier, unfortunately. I use it as a window maximize button, really helpful.

No I use those for tab management - it'll all in my OP. :)

Thanks for the modifier info. I may give it a go in Ubuntu anyway - if it's possible under any environment, it'd be Linux.

Cheers everyone for the help and advice!

Well, what do you know - after rummaging a bit further in the mouse settings, I found out you actually CAN use the thumb button as keystroke. I've set it as 'Ctrl' and it works like a zoom modifier through and through.

I also 'burrowed' your idea of switching tabs with the back and forward buttons using the 'Ctrl+Shift+Tab' and 'Ctr+Tab' keystrokes, respectively.

    Thanks, much better now :D

You can use the scroll wheel side-to-side rocker for tab management as well.

Likewise, you can also use the scroll wheel rocker to control volume :)

I personally have and love the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX. I wrote a review myself about it a while back when it came out. Seems to fit most your criteria. After two years of use, mouse had a small issue a few months back (most likely due to me banging it around to much, I'll admit), but I called Logitech and they sent a new one, no problems (and I kept the old :)). Otherwise mouse has been brilliant, oozes class IMO. Not to toot my own horn but maybe my mini-review can give you some idea: Anywhere Mini-Review.

Tell me if you need to know anything else about the mouse.

Oooo a great mouse (making assumptions from my experience with my VX). Only issue is that the Anywhere MX is quite small. If the VX Nano and is easily 3/4 the mass of the M705, then I would assume the MX is equally as small. The other issue is the shape - it doesn't have that angle-sculpted angle thingy to conform to your right hand. I'm not sure if that is a major deal breaker or not...

My thoughts exactly! Definitely nice to have another option: I'll have to meet it and see how it feels in my hand, though. (twss)

That's the thing, I also had those same reservations before I purchased the mouse. I thought it would be too small...or the ambidextrous shape (I guess) would be uncomfortable. But a minor adjustment of the hand to accomodate the 'different' shape and I was pleasantly surprised with it, and believe me I have big hands myself. Other than that, the MX just feels like a refined piece of technology (so it would be quite durable), it looks fantastic and is a joy to use. If the minor adjustment to accomodate its different aesthetic (and comfortable one, IMO) isn't a deal breaker, I recommend it.

As they say, try before you buy. :). Good luck!

Whats with that enormous receiver? The receiver on my Performance mouse is just a little pip that I leave in all the time.

Agreed that the MX Anywhere is an awesome mouse. It's kept in my bag with my laptop at all times. I use a Performance MX at my desk and the Anywhere (which is comparatively huge) but the Anywhere always feels comfortable.
