I'm hoping this at least has some relevance in this section:
At work I have a laptop, and an external monitor (it's common setup for everyone in the building). However a colleague had her last today, and I'm going to use her monitor at my desk until a replacement is hired (it generally takes awhile, plus my boss said it was fine).
The problem is, I've seen others around the building who can use the laptop screen and both monitors all at the same time with no problem, but when I try it, I can only use 2 out of 3.
I've begun to think it is a limitation of the graphics card, but then I notice these people have the same laptop model as me (I can't give it though, as I'm not at work and I didn't bring it home this weekend and I don't know it by heart).
For one reason or another I haven't had the chance to ask anyone in person how they did it, so I am asking here if anyone can help me. Thanks!
TL;DR: Please help me get 2 external monitors working on my laptop at the same time!

If you have an older laptop, then it will only support two monitors maximum (one being the built in screen). To connect more monitors, you need a device such as Matrox TripleHead or a USB to DVI/VGA adapter.

They might be using one of those then, thanks

It might help is you tell us what model notebook you have?

You might have same base model as others but the exact model you are using is equipped with different, lower end graphics card.
