The battery to my gateway laptop stopped charging yesterday. The battery is only a month old and has worked up until now. The computer works while it is plugged in, but the power meter always says that it is charging with 1% remaining. When I take the battery out the computer can tell that there is no battery there. If it helps, the battery is an Li4402A.
Any ideas of what is wrong, or what I could do to fix it?

try letting it completely discharge, then plugging it back in when the laptop is off

Tried it. If I unplug the power the computer turns off, and even leaving it charging overnight there is still only 1% power when I turn it back on.

Is there any way I can check the motherboard or test the battery?

Did you buy it new? If you did, I would send it back and get a new one. The one that you have sounds as if it may be defective. If it's only a month old, it should have at least a 90 day unconditional warranty with it.
