Hi all, I'm new to this forum and spent a lot of time searching for a good notebook cooler for my new M1530(undervolted to 1.000volt,but still hot). lots of infos and ppl talking about the Zalman NC1000 & 2000, NZXT cryo...,(wished to try out one of those), but I think they are too expensive.Like the nc2000, it costs $71.58 shipped and NZXT costs $89.40.
And since my wallet is kinda sick, I decided to make myself a notebook cooler and wanted to share.
i got a mess notebook stand from walmart for $9.99 and a thermaltake 80mm 5v usb fan from frys which is also $9.99, so the total was $19.98+tax.
after 15 mins drilling and screwing, i got this cooler

the fan has a speed control and will run max at 3000rpm (47.28 CFM)
here is some specs:
minimum speed: 1300rpm
max speed: 3000rpm
rated voltage: 5v DC
noise level: 17dBA @ 1300rpm 31dBA @ 3000rpm (very loud)

my lappy is a bit longer , but no problem, I put the fan blow straight up to where the cpu vent located.
Here is the rest of the pix that i took

Great Job ! It actually looks COOL
btw, just change "homemake" cooler to "homemade" (in signature)- other than that, it looks perfect. Maybe you can start selling them for $39.99 .
-
get some NEONS bro! lol
apart from that, I'd add some more fans just to cool the underside of the laptop where the HD bay is and the GPU's are.
Also, since you haven't got a USB hub, I'd consider powering it through a wall socket and not a USB port to save battery life. -
other than that, will you be my first buyer lol
-
that actually looks like a real clean job for a DYI.
good work man. yur HD temps look perfectly fine. i would recommend another fan for the vents around the wifi card (touch pad area). that part gets pretty hot after some use. -
Wow..nice job on the cooler for your 1530! Kudo's to you
The pictures you took turned out nice!

that's very nice. i regret ( almost ) buying a commercial notebook cooler. BTW, i would like to suggest to plug your fan in an external power supply. or buy a self powered usb hub then plug it there. Your mobo can support the voltage but might not handle large amperage for long time use. I fried my old dell mobo when i used the usb port as power supply.
-
Do you think a 120mm fan would have been a better choice ? Maybe you could get more air and little less fan noise (120mm normally turn slower)
-
One of the neatest DIY coolers ive seen... great job!
I want one of those notebook stands, i cant seem to find any that sell internationally.
-
-
If you want to make one, you dont have to get the exact same stand like mine, you could use some mess paper holders, have it a little fix, then add a 5V DC fan(if you want to have it plug in one of a USB port) under where the CPU vent located . -
That is very nice. Well done!
AC adaptor powered USB hub + multiple fans + notebook stand...imagine the possibilities... -
Yes, your cooler can be fully customised to the notebook. You only need 2 fans.. one for the CPU/GPU and one for the HDD.
I really like the stand, it looks simple and sturdy. I dont plan to put fans on it or anything. -
-
Hey there. Is the fan blowing into the laptop or drawing hot air away from it? Thank you =)

Cool home brew mod!
-
super baller.
-
Good job, very simple DIY cooler. Are those mesh notebook stands available at most Wal-Marts? I haven't seen it around.

Hows it do when the computer is underload? Thats amazing for an idle drop!
-
But seriously, that is a nice project you did there. Now all you have to do is paint the cooler a nice blue to match your pooter.
+Rep for you for being a 'Geek MacGyver'. -
I bought this stand cooler from Walmart for $15 bucks. It's under the name of Rubbermaid (although it's actually made by Rolodex or something) and can be found near the binders/school supplies section.
-
Is it sturdy?
is the top part easy to take off?
and did you add any fan under it? -
how is the stand?
Very nicely built, lots of ventilation
Is it sturdy?
Heck yes. It is rated up to 15 pounds and supports my 9.2 pounds Gateway easily
is the top part easy to take off?
There are three ways to adjust the height: by using the highest leverage with four knots to adjust to and a smaller leverage for a smaller angle of use. Or you can put both leverage down to use at the lowest angle possible.
and did you add any fan under it?
Yeah I have, the Antec 120mm Tri-cool was on sale from 15 bucks to 6 bucks each so I grabbed 5. I'll be installing 3 of them underneath soon but I'm not sure whether to blow the air toward or away from the laptop. -
-
It doesn't come with fans. It's just a laptop stand. I'll be adding some fans under the last black mesh.

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
ok im going to make my own, but with 2 fans. ive got everything but a good stand. i picked some of that material from staples, but its not as strong as a real stand would be.
i went to walmart(canada) and couldnt find it.
does anyone know where i can get this or something like this for under 20$?
thanks (ill also do a review and a step by step when i make it)
thanks -
This thread inspired me to try to make my own cooler.
I have one question tho:
Will the vibrations from the fan, that is attached to the metal mess the laptop sits on, hurt the laptop in anyway? -
) and i have been looking for a coolin pad, but I guess I'll try this idea! have any suggestions on fans? i'd like to get 2 or 3, and i want them to be quiet, but they have to blow hard. thanks much.
-
*bump* any 1 still here?
-
I read this thread and had to register just to say, WOW,
that was a awesome DIY . . Great work, I want one now
Now I guess I could finish reading the replies -
That was very nice
Think i'll make my own notebook cooler too. Just need to find some mesh. -

I just made my cooler yesterday, and it works GREAT. I picked up a $20 120mm LED fan (antec) from circuit city and a $5 mesh paper holder thing from walmart. The fan requries 12V, but my usb was outputting only about 5v (maybe it was just the cable), so I had find some other cable to supply the power. It turns out that my old speakers had an AC adapter that was 12V, so I just stripped one end and connected that to the fan. I also installed a switch (about $3-$4 from walmart) for easy on-off.
But wow, my CPU temps dropped 12 degrees Celsius while idle. I may make a thread with pics later. -
very nice diy cooler. i may make one for my laptop. good inspiration.
-
woo jsut found this thread was thinking of making one but with 3 fans and an external powered usb hub think it wud work? lol and cool my asus g1s nicely? hahha
found this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182139
and maybe bunch of fans ahahhaha! -
Woah this is awesome!!

What about not using SLI while not gaming which reduces the temperature significantly.
-
This thread inspired me to built my own cooler (as I use to have an antec one that sucks air instead of blowing it).
I bought two 120mm fans from Microcenter (one for my desktop)
and the laptop cooler from walmart.
I cut open an old transformer power adptor and soldered it onto the 4pin molex adaptor.
This made my 12v led fan ran at full speed and lights up!
And a pic in the dark.
I havn't done some intensive benchmarks yet, but it seems to be running a bit cooler with it on (mayb 3-5 C?) -
I've made the same cooler, but I'm finding the black mesh to flex quite a bit while typing.
-
wow nice homemade laptop cooler.....those are massive drops in temps their props to you....
All i have is a 8$ antec cooler...lol
-
found this laptop stand @ walmart tonight. 16 bucks...
-
I am going to get the laptop stand but I cannot find the stand on the online store for Walmart. I am going to visit my local wallmart when I get my new HDX18T laptop and I was thinking of buying 2 or 3 120mm Antec Fans. Do you know how I could power 2 120mm fans (probabaly 12V each?) on an ac adaptor? I am very new to this and here are the things I have so far of buying.
1 Notebook Stand from Wallmart (Rubbermaid/Rolodex) $16
2 Antec 120mm Fans $??
1 AC Adaptor for the two Fans $??
Thanks so much you guys -
Very inspiring .. I really like the look of the fan, the temp drop it gives, the usb power and it's speed control .. I don't suppose anyone knows where I can purchase this fan in the UK or get it delivered to the UK? I have looked everywhere but I can't find it on UK websites but it appears to be plentifully available in the USA.
-
wow! Definitely I wanna try this one
but the fan cost more than 20 bucks here in Indonesia
alternative...alternative...any suggestion?
-
I'm excited, I cant wait to make this laptop cooler, one for me and one for the girlfriend. This makes much more sense than spending an unnecessary amount of money on a laptop cooler.
