It can be done. You should look into getting a lapdesk with a hard surface, preferably one that holds it at a comfortable angle for typing, as well as a pillow that gives good back and neck support.

The pins and needles in your fingers could be from lack of electrical grounding, if your AC adapter is the 2-prong kind, not the 3-prong grounded kind.

Take a break once in a while. Move around a bit to get your circulation going. I spend many hours sometimes since i work on the pc and have to "work out" just to be able to sit on the pc and go for extended times.

I think probably the most important aspect of using a laptop in bed is to make sure your back and neck posture is good. Do not sit hunched over your laptop, and always make sure you have a pillow(s) supporting your back.

Actually, it was a pretty big issue with the Dell XPS M1330 and M1530 models. They have all aluminum palmrests, and originally shipped with 2-prong ungrounded power cords. So, the current would travel through the unguarded metal palmrests and would cause mild shocks to users. :p

Get out of bed. The problem is your poor posture and positioning. Beds are designed for lying down on, not sitting. Pins and needles are either due to cutting off the blood supply to the nerve, or compression of the nerve.

QFT. There is no ergonomic way to type on a computer while lying down, or even sitting. The only thing that might work is if you can put your back up against a wall or some pillows or something for support and sit like you're in a chair. The only other option would be to find some way to hang the laptop above yourself so you aren't craning yourself forward to work on it. While not recommended, it could be quite amusing to see ;)
