I was bored, and didn't want to spend the money on a notebook cooler, but still wanted a cooling solution besides propping up my notebook on random stuff so it could be elevated off the desk enough to give the fans breathing room. So I built a little set of legs to hold my notebook up.
All I did was take some thin cardboard and folded it up into 4 little legs, then wrapped them in electrical tape to make them look nice and hold them together. The two back legs were tall and rectangular, with a slight angle at the top since I wanted my notebook to be at an angle. The two front legs were shorter cube shapes, but also with a slight angle on the top.
Then I simply taped the front legs to the front of the notebook, and the back legs to the back of the notebook. When attaching the back legs I left them so the tape created a hinge and I could fold them in to make the laptop fit in my backpack well. I also added little stoppers in the back so they wouldn't want to fold back too much.
Here's a rudimentary picture I did in MSP of it in standing and folded positions, if you can't tell, the blue thing is the notebook, the black things are the legs, the green dot is the hinge spot, and the red dot is the stopper.

You'd probably be better off making an actual stand, or just buying one, but eh, I was bored.

Very nice and innovative. The extra airflow should help a lot. Have you observed the temps before and after your mod?
-
I'm not sure what my temps were anymore back when it was just flat on the desk, because I've been propping it up on stuff for a while.

Any extra space between the bottom of a lappie and the surface it's sitting on helps. It will always help to keep things cooler.
Albeit....not too much though compared to a fan added which pushes the air around as well.
See my post here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=316945&page=3
Great fun to experiment when it costs about zero bucks (except for the fan).
Cheers,

I have used a textbook in the past and just offset the laptop to the side so the fan vent is not sitting on the text book.

wouldnt turning on your air con would be a lot more simpler and effective solution?
My no-budget cooling solution.
