Well, I left my ipod in my jeans, then threw it into a wash cycle, and TWO dryer cycles (total of about 3 hours in the dryer). It had a latex rubber protective cover on it (iSkin) but it is still buggered. I've had it plugged in for over an hour now and it's stuck on "Please wait, very low battery" and wont recognize its flash memory on my computer.
My question is, how reliable are battery replacements for ipods? Is it possible to force the ipod to work as a flash drive only? How likely is it that the dryer totally ruined the battery?
-
It is more likely the washer ruined the whole thing...water on an electronic component that has a battery is usually a no-no.
-
You might want to look into sending it in for repair at this point honestly. It sucks, but things happen...
-
First, let the iPod dry off for a few days (considering it got wet in washer). The dryer may not fully dry out the inside parts. Let the iPod rest a few days, charge it up and reset the iPod. Although I don't expect it to survive, but try anyways
.
You might as well wait, there's new iPods expected next month. -
Once it got wet you should have waited a LONG time for it to dry out. Likely the water didn't kill it; you plugging it in and turning it on while it was still wet killed it.
-
dammit. How much would a repair cost? I got it in 2005 (christmas present) so the warranty is gone.
I would rather not get another Ipod, given how I cant replace the battery.
Does anyone know of any MP3 players that take a SD card, have replaceable batteries (i.e. triple A's or whatever) and sound decent? Size isn't a factor really. -

same thing happened to my iPod nano...it's dead...T_T

you could try having a browse through this site..
http://www.ifixit.com/
they show very detailed explanations of how to open, repair/replace bits (they also sell the parts I believe) for Apple products.. they were one of the first to sensibly crack open (not with a hammer) the iPhone and document it's components. I hope this is of some use.. I broke my ipod got fed up with it, binned it, then 2months later found this website!... sods law I guess.. -

My Ipod has magically come back to life! After 2 days of being plugged into my USB port, the flash has finally started working, and the Ipod's battery seems to be back in action! Freaking miracle! Thanks Steve (Jobs) for making my 300$ investment tough as nails. -
Seriously wait like a month... The new widescreen ipod is coming out VERY soon.. save up for that instead of repairing!
-
1 big problem: water damage don't really show up until like a month after or so. And water damage is not covered in the warranty. And it's always obvious it's water damage.

Cowon D2 comes in up to 4gb capacity onboard and can be expanded via SDHC cards.
An 8gb version is rumored to come out soon.
It has 52 hours of battery but the battery is not user replaceable. -
Thanks for the heads up (ill have time to backup everything). My Ipod is nearly 2 years old now, so I'm not covered by the warranty anyway.
-
you should open it up and try and clean it and dry it out then theres a chance it might not die in a month
-
Your ipod will probably be a waste to repair. Firstly, you may have damaged the main board by turning it on so soon. More importantly, though, even if you fix it now.. you're looking at an extremely high possibility of corrosion damage in time. I've seen it a lot, actually.
By the way, there's actually little dots inside ipods that turn colors when they get wet. That way repair centers know when to void your warranty (and when to tell you that repairing it would cost more than the cost of the ipod anyway). -
btw this cover that you had on the ipod, did it come with a guarantee that it was waterproof? if so then those guys might be the people who can replace your soon to die ipod.
-
Nah no guarantee that it was waterproof by any means. The headphone port at the bottom is wiiiide open.
I highly recommend Iskin though. Expensive ($40-50), but it works very, very well at keeping your 'pod in mint condition. I use the orange one. Glow in the dark too (ooo glowy)
Ill crack it open and see if I can clean it out etc. Thanks for the help -
Run a diagnostics test, (if you have a 5 gen ipod + )
Hold Menu and the Select button (Middle white circle)
Then when you see the Apple logo (silver apple on black), hold the Previous button and the Select button (middle white circle)
Then your ipod will beep and you will see a diagnostics screen, perform the tests to see what exactly is the problem
