    Hello guys

I have a Toshiba Qosmio X300-158. And In summer, The GPU temperature goes high up to 90 C at load. I found that NZXT Cryo LX is one of the best notebook coolers out there, however I found that some people suffer that their laptops can't provide sufficient power via the USB ports at high cooling settings.

So What is the current that the cooler needs at high cooling setting ?
Also, is there an available way to connect the cooler to a AC to DC 12V adapter if that will help to make the fans work at full power (in case my USB ports can make it work but not at full power)

If it will work with a 12V adapter, what it should be the output current ?
    Thanks :)

If you get it from a supplier, you can ask for the adapter for it for free usually. NZXT owners, confirm me on this one.

yes, NZXT does provide AC adapters upon request now. tho i am not sure of the specs on the AC adapter NZXT provides. i don't think it's a 12v. there are a few guys here runnin their stock cryo LX's with 12v plugs, and they have had very good results.

the stock fan speed is pretty low, so i would only worry about power consumption issues if u had an older laptop.

Actually, I am ordering it from an online store. So I may need to ask the the seller himself. So It seems that it will work fine on my laptop.

All I really want to use he cooler at its max speed. I know that 5V might not be sufficient enough for the max. speed, So I need higher voltage.

SO what do you think ?

How do you use it, houstoned, with your notebook to get higher RPM ?
Also, Do you recommend changing the fans to better ones, but still running on the 5V USB power ? or I do need an external adapter anyway.

    I am confused

Also, shouldn't be the adapter providing DC output not an AC ?

i don't think it really matters which vendor u got yur cooler from, as long as u can provide a proof of purchase NZXT should be more than happy to send u a AC/DC plug. AC/DC, whichever one goes into the wall, i get them mixed up all the time. :p

i like to baby all of my equipment, so i went out and bought a mini USB hub just to power my cryo LX. i just plug both of the provided cables (USB and the small AC? plug) in to make sure the cooler gets ample power. the stock fan speed is more than enough for my cooling needs. the cryo LX dropped my temps 10c-15c+ all across the board. i could only imagine how much CFM's those babies can kick out with a 12v plug.

the cryo LX is very easy to disassemble so u can fit any 120mm fan in there, as long as it has a small enough profile to fit into the mess casing. u just have to get a fan with the correct plug or u can splice the plugs yurself and make it work. as far as runnin the OEM fans at a higher RPM, u only need a higher voltage plug for this. do a quick search cuz there was already a thread similar to this one. alot of guys just go out to their local radioshack or whatever and picked up a 12v plug.

Nice so, you are using the AC cord that came with the cooler as well as the other USB cord to increase the current you need. 10 ~ 15 C is very surprising :D
That will help me to play for extended periods. If that is with a 5V supply.

    How could it be with a 12V ? :D

Also, is the 12V adapter, DC or AC? I think DC, right ?

    Thanks :)

EDIT: I found someone on the internet said that he connected it with a 12V DC adapter rated at 2A and his 8400M was running at 35C lower at load.

geez...35c cooler. that's pretty insane. my highest temp drop was from my CPUs. they dropped about 20 something degrees celcius.

Yea.. I think that cooler is a beast. It just need enough power to see that beast working :D

Will any DC adapter fit the power jack? I will try to find also an adapter rated at 2A. I don't know what will a higher output will do. So It is better to be safe !

I was browsing the forum today and found that some people said that fans may handle the 12V but the USB PCB may not and may fry. However I don't know if the board fried, Will the fans still work ? A guy suggested to run at 9V, because 12V is no longer better and it will fry the board.

    I am confused...

no, they are saying that if u use a higher voltage power source, than the provided 5v. u will no longer be able to use the built in USB hub (the cryo LX has 4 USB slots built in the rear) cuz of the higher voltage power source.
