    Hi

I received my new mains powered usb hub today
and it seems to be working fine, however there is a slight
problem which is driving me mad.

Im using the usb hub for my external hard drive, now before
when the drive was connected directly to my laptop whenever
i switched the laptop on the hard drive would come on and when
i turned the laptop off the hard drive would also switch off.

I now have the external hard drive connected through the usb hub
and the drive works absolutely fine, however when i turn my laptop off
the hard drive stays on and wont switch off unless i unplug it from the mains.

Im a complete novice when it comes to usb hubs so could anyone
PLEASE tell me is this normal if not, why this is happening and is there
anything i can do to fix this problem?

    Thankyou

Well I believe this is normal. Your hard drive is receiving power from the mains now rather then your laptop. So it doesn’t really know (or matter) when your laptop is removed.

    You can:
    1. Ignore this
    2. Plug the drive into your laptop
    3. Shut off the drive. Some drives have on/off switches; you could use that if so. Otherwise just remove it from power and it will turn off.

I think your best off just leaving it running though if you don't have a reason to turn it off.

The external hard drive is also powered by the mains, and doesn't draw any power from the laptop,
and as for leaving the hard drive constantly on well personally i dont wont to leave it on constantly.

Would it be safe to unplug the usb hub from the mains when my laptop is switched off
and plug the hub back in before i switch the laptop back on again?

Also the hub has a red power light which is constantly on, but also has four green lights
which show when a usb device is connected, luckily when my laptop is switched off the green light
which indicates the hard drive also switches off which must mean that the hard drive has been
safely disconnected from the laptop, its just the damm drive that wont turn off.
