My WinXP, hp pavilion ze5375us laptop finally quit. So I guess I can remove the HD & retrieve its data from what I've read. I count 22 pins in one row & 21 pins in another (1 pin near the middle of one of the two rows is missing as that's the way it was made). There are 4 other pins (2 in each row) beside these 43. So which, I'd assume, EIDE (as that's what hp says my laptop has) to USB adapter do I need? None of the images/descriptions I've seen show an EIDE hd with this # of pins. And, since I've removed the HD from the laptop is it safe to recycle the laptop. IOW: is there any other data anywhere that I need to worry about?

I have few of these 3in1 adapters at work. With the old laptop drives no external power is needed.
SATA/PATA to usb adapter usually but names differ. Since it also has serial connection you can use it later with newer hard drives. -
The thing that has me worried is that my HD has 43 + 4 (47 total) pins & the Descriptions for the products I'm seeing claim usually a different # of pins. I just don't want to buy the wrong adapter.

There are two ways you can do this. If you still have an old PC with an IDE connector on the motherboard, then a cable like this ( 40 Way IDE - 2.5 inch Drive Adaptor Cable - Google that!) or you will need to find a 2.5 inch IDE caddy.
In my old Desktop Support days we used the cable to retrieve data (as we had an abundance of old corporate PCs!) -
As long as you get a 2.5" ide adapter you should be fine... (I think your local best buy or staples or office depot may even have them in stock)

EIDE HD ? I did not use such kind of hard drives. As far as I am concerned, EIDE has the same kind of connectors with IDE which is with enhanced performance. If I did not misunderstand your need, I will recommend this adapter which I once had a good experience. It will be well compatible with both Universal 2.5/3.5/5.25 Drives. I believe and hope it will work rightly for you.

Those 4 pins are not needed/used in data transfer. Cable/adapter does not connect to them. -
Copy both replies. I currently don't have a working computer so I'll have to use a public computer. Will it work?

If you use an adapter like I've shown (or basically any other usb adapter) the drive is visible in the computer like any usb drive would be.

Cool. That's what I wanna hear. Thanks for the replies.
